Dana White interview: UFC isn't worried about Mayweather PPV This content is protected By Steve Cofield This content is protected Fortunately "Pretty Boy" suffered came up with an rib injury and the fight had to be moved. Bad news for fight fans. You'll have to choose between UFC 103 in Dallas and Mayweather-Juan Manuel Marquez on Sept. 19. UFC president Dana White told the Cofield and Cokin Show on ESPNRadio1100 that he heard this was coming: This content is protected This content is protected "It's a good thing he hurt his rib. I heard they sold about 12 tickets for that fight. He's good at playing the bad guy, but at the end of the day you can talk as much as you want but it's all about the fights." This content is protected This content is protected This content is protected This content is protected You need two good fighters that people really want to see. It's not a fight people want to see." White said the only boxer he would never tangle with was Oscar De La Hoya. Hopefully these boxing v. UFC pay-per-views don't become commonplace. Who wins this PPV battle? Can Floyd outsell UFC 103?
hmm says... Dana breaking it down.... he does bring up some good points that haven't been mentioned on these boards.
Only a while ago he said Boxing is destined to die a quick death after DLH retires, now he's talking about Mayweather and Pacquiao.
mayweather isn't worried about the UFC event either. It doesn't really matter that the cards are on the same date. Both boxing and MMA have their own separate fan bases. Each will get their fans so its not really a big deal. Plus Mayweather anbd Marquez will ezch be paid more than any UFC fighter so I doubt they really care.
Nonsense talk by Dana, and he knows it. There are two main reasons why Mayweather has opted to take on JMM: 1. It's his first comeback fight after over a year and a half of inactivity. Taking on the number 2 P4P fighter as opposed to the number 1, is a sound and logical choice. Bearing in mind the ring rust he'll be carrying, why immediately take on a guy that's on top of the world right now. 2. Perhaps the most important reason which has gotten under Dana's skin, is the business logic behind choosing Marquez. Mayweather knows that whether the fight with Pacquiao takes place now or next year, it will be an instant PPV success and draw massive figures. Similarly, a fight with JMM will also draw big numbers because fight fans are buzzing about the news of Mayweather returning. I've not come across any boxing fan who is not excited about this fight, absolutely everyone is looking forward to it. So it's simple, instead of being treated to just one superfight involving Mayweather, we're being treated to two, and possibly more. So Dana's claims not only fall at the first hurdle, but it also exposes his envy at boxing's hottest division and the mouth watering fights that will be happening in the next year or two.
That Floyd Mayweather is not a superstar? Who in the UFC is half as well known as Floyd? If you name any UFC or MMA fighter they have all been baten about 5 times by guys with losing records.
Forrest Griffin may be better known than Mayweather. Brock Lesnar may be better known than Mayweather. It's hard to tell who is more "well known". Does that mean that you have heard their name before, or that you actually KNOW something about them. It's not that hard to name MMA fighters who haven't been beaten 5 times by guys with losing records. Though, yes, MMA fighters are rarely coddled the same as boxers, and therefore often have losses much earlier in their career. I prefer that to giving a boxer 30 gimmes before his first real test.
MMA'ers get gimmes, their fans are just stupid enough to not realize it. And they just dont lineup cans for young prospects. Im not going to lie, you get a few cans but there is actually a method to its madness. They put them in there with speedsters, brawlers, boxers, punchers, southpaws, inside fighters, outside-fighters, crafty veterans. That is why Pavlik was able to get in there with Taylor and not look like an idiot. And building up a fighter is absolutely necessary in boxing, because if you dont it may just ruin your career.
And I had to laugh at Dana's "I always put on great cards." Well thats a huge load of BS. I guess Dana doesnt remember UFC 97, UFC 96, UFC 95 and the many, many other cards hes put on in the past couple years. However, Dana actually did bring up good points in regards to Pacquiao/Mayweather. A fight as big as this, needs to happen now. With them fighting other top fighters its just risking a potentially massive fight for no reason. And, if Griffin was more well-known than Mayweather he would generate the PPV buys that Mayweather generates. But he doesnt and he never will.
They share a lot of the same fan base too. But they usually have "perferred" sports that they like. I like MMA and Boxing but I'm more of a Boxing fan. But if it came down to two cards...one MMA and one Boxing I'd choose which card was better. But Floyd vs JMM is a BIG fight which I'll side with boxing.
I expect that Mayweathers fight will do well enough with 24/7 and HBO do a good job of hyping fights. Problem for boxing is that the undercards don't even compare. In the UK I expect Mayweather to easily outdo 103.
