What a sad but entertaining matchup. And how bizarre too, that a washed up middleweight could knock out a washed up heavyweight champ.
That fight fascinated me when it happened. A Heavyweight from the earlly/mid 80's getting stopped by a fat old middleweight. Those late career fights can have the oddest results.
Coetzee was shot to hell, and still scored the only kd...a younger Gerrie would have killed Barkley,...in fact a match up like that would have made no sense at all.
I have never watched the fight, I just could not bring myself to do it. I spoke via email to Gerrie's wife about 3 years ago, and Gerrie was doing fine. He's not a rich man, but he lives comfortably.
Yeah, he is. Although he got into a bit of hot water with the authorities a while back for operating without a license. That's been sorted out now, as far as I know.
Did Gerrie know Corrie Sanders? When Corrie Sanders was tragically murdered a few years ago I saw kind statements from Kallie Knoetze, Frans Botha, and maybe Pierre Coetzer. I'm just curious.
I would imagine that they had met at some point, yeah. I honestly can't say what they thought of each other though. Both were pretty humble fellows though, so they most likely got along fine. I know that years ago, when Francois Botha was still an up-and-coming pro, that there was supposedly some bad blood between him and Coetzee. Over what, I don't know. There was a report in the papers that it came to blows, but no real details were given.
I watched it back then. Both fighting is slow motion  Barkley was just throwing haymakers but was busier and more aggressive. It was a clear win for him.
