You know this is tough. Both were powerful, and Jackson was particularly powerful with a single punch, but both lost quite a bit, Barkley moreso, and to some lesser opposition. On the other hand, Barkley has come back to win many tough fights including ones with Olijade, Hearns, Coetzee, etc. as well as put up good efforts as a loser in fights w/ Sims, Duran, and Toney. Jackson rarely won tough fights. I could easily go with either man, but it seems to me that Jackson has a better record for coming back from difficulty. Barkley TKO 3. This is a wild but brief fight. A fight with these two kind of guys can't last long.
I agree with your assessment except your statement that he put forth a good effort in the Toney fight unless by good effort you mean stood there and got destroyed for 8 rounds
Never really got to see Jackson against a guy like Barkley or even a Benn. All he got was McClellan, who was huge, and McCallum some years earlier. Both different scenarios than Barkley. I think Jackson was good enough at his best to weather the storm and land something earth shattering. Barkley might even get up and mount a comeback but the damage would've been done.
I agree that with how puffed up Barkley's eyes were he was losing the fight, and I would say Toney had the fight in the bag, but it was pretty close, punch for punch I think, but I would have to agree, Barkley couldn't have won.
A tough one to decide. I go back and forth when this one comes up. I'll shoot for Jackson, with Iran getting pulled out by the ref.
I haven't seen it in a long time, but boxrec says it was close fight, and I've heard a lot of people say it was a close fight.
Jackson lost quite a bit???? In his first 13 years as a pro he only lost twice in 50 fights. Once to hall of famer, Mike McCallum, and once to the hard punching Gerald McClellan in a shootout. And, Jackson was in his 30s and had major eye problems by the time he faced McClellan. The losses after McClellan are no different than the losses 99% of all boxers suffer if they fight on to long. Those losses should not be held against him.
Jackson lost 6 times, so not quite a bit I guess, but enough times that it wasn't unlikely. I agree w/ you, the losses to McCallum and McClellan (2x) are the only ones I hold against Jackson. I was merely bringing that up to point out that Jackson lost several times.
Jackson had the raw power but Barkley had the skill. While bearing in mind that JJ is the sort of guy that might win any fight with a one-punch KO, I think the odds are that Barkley weathers the storm and beats him over the distance either on points or KO. In my opinion Iran was a much better boxer than JJ and is pretty underrated.
Won't rule out a KO win for Jackson but I think Barkley can hang tough enough in the early rounds and score a KO himself.
