So i have been doing my homework on Iran Barkley latley. I always loved the brawler, slugger, swarmer types. Great power, granite chin, heart and balls are the three qualities I look for in a boxer. Although Iran Barkley's record wouldn't lead you to believe he was an ATG I think he deserves at least an honorable mention as a great fighter. I first saw Barkley in his fight with an aging Duran in the FOTY 1989 (I'm 21 I didnt see it until a couple years ago) and I was rooting against him because of my sentiment for an old Manos de Piedra who turned back the clock that night in a weight class far from his origin at lightweight. Duran won that fight, which was an amazing feat but I gained a lot of respect for barkley that night as well they both went to war in there, Duran knocked Barkley down and Barkley hit Duran with a hook that almost knocked his head off. He some how had Tommy Hearns number shocking the world by knocking him out in the third round of their first fight and then proving that it wasn't a fluke by moving up 15 pounds and beating him again by SD however I thought the fight was clearly won by Barkley. Exposes Michael Nunn but loses by MD with nunn running the whole fight. Only man to stop Van Horne. Moved up to heavyweight and had some success. I could go on and on but the man has an impressive resume. He's from the south bronx tough as nails and didnt duck anyone and even when he was beat never stopped pressing forward (see Toney fight) He was a true gun-slinger, I hate using that word however because it gives the implication that it would only take one shot to get a gun-slinger out of there and Barkley had a good chin. What I mean by it is he came to fight and put his best vs your best and see who's the better man. No dancing, no stick and move he came straight for you and went to war. Barkley lost more than a few fights but at least he brought it everytime. Pressing forward with two swollen eyes and taking more punishment against James Toney is the image that comes to mind about his resiliency. He was out-classed but he never stopped trying to win that fight. Nigel Benn and him had a one round shoot out where both fighters were hurt in the first round and twice Nigel hit Barkley when he was down. Barkley didnt ***** or complain and if it wasn't for the three knockdown rule i'm sure he would of given Benn hell in a war. So as tribute to a warrior I salute Iran Barkley.
