i know he is being dimplomatic-just passing on what he said....plus i dont think he ever would have announced it yesterday- it would have robbed all the press from last nights show!.. get the feeling he is planing more smaller shows. and if they were all like last night that would great
I think Steve wellings had a word with Timms and I know the big man cornered Gerry Callan about him and Sweeney!!!! Paddy come on and start suggesting a few more fights on facebook...
He was originally planning on doing alot of small shows (thats why he originally did the deal with the stadium) but then the recession came along and ****ed up the plans for that!
I think last night showed smaller shows have limited appeal. I though the atmosphere only picked up when Kenna almost sparked Barrett. That got peoples attention for a while. Also it was far from a full house. If you can't sell out 4 Irish Title fights with tickets as reasonably priced in the €30-60 range then I don't know what will sell out. Also, as Paddy said, the recession has kicked in. I don't think people have the money to go to a lot of these small shows and are more likely to hang on for the big events. Lets face it you're looking at the same group of people going to the small shows. You're not going to get the same 2,000 people paying €40 five or six times a year to go to small shows plus another €80 a couple of times a year for a bigger show. Most people aren't in a position to buy €400-500 worth of tickets per annum. And thats before you start throwing in all the other costs of going to a fight night.
But it wont be the same people going everytime.Every fighter always brings a certain amount of his own supporters. And these small hall promotions can be scattered all around the country, its the way forward. Last nights fights were great, no fight failed to excite, and as long as rte are backing Peters and are happy with the product, everyone is a winner. No way, the opposite in my view:nono
I agree with this. Last night's show on RTE was excellent viewing and it would be great if RTE backed a lot more of these shows as there are so many great Irish Title fights out there.
People LOVE knockouts thats why you need people like Prunty on the undercard, a natural show man who will jump over the ropes and knock his man out all while looking like an entry for heat magazines coveted "Torso of the week" award
