http://www.rte.ie/sport/boxing/2010/0219/dunneb.html Former WBA World Super-Bantamweight champion Bernard Dunne has announced his retirement from boxing. Dunne confirmed his decision in an interview with RTÉ Sport's Joe Stack, claiming 'it is time to step on and face new challenges'. The Neilstown man said: 'After a long thought-out process and speaking with my family I've decided to announce my retirement from boxing. 'I've achieved all my life dreams and ambitions in the sport and it is the right moment for me. 'I'm 30 years of age and it is time to step on and face new challenges.' Dunne highlighted his victory over Ricardo Cordoba in front of a capacity crowd in Dublin's O2 Arena last March to win the WBA World Super-Bantamweight title as the highlight of his career. The feat came on the same day as Ireland winning the Grand Slam in the Six Nations on what was one of the greatest days in the history of Irish sport. 'There have been so many highs in my career but to pick one out you'd have to pick the night against Cordoba. 'It is the stuff dreams are really made of. That night was, I suppose you could say, like a movie script.'
Well unlike Oisin ***an who i have alot of respect for, Eddie Hyland can Box as well as stand there in a war......So it would be an amazing fight.......
A very sad day for Irish boxing. I'm glad he didn't force himself to go forward just becase 'he's only 30'. The right time to get out is the right time to get out. Obviously couldn't make SBW because I still think he could have done good things at that weight. I know we have a lot of other fighters at various levels but we don't get many EBU and World Title holders (more in the future I hope). The small minded begrudgers will always remember him for the two defeats but the rest of us can remember him for the rest of a superb career that revitalised Irish boxing and gave us a hell of a lot of great nights. No doubt I'll break out the career boxset when I'm gargled later. I'll stay away from the Cordoba fight. Bring a tear to a glass eye that would.
Would be Andys toughest fight he has ever had anyway in which i see Eddies hand been raised at the end of an amazing fight
Just heard the news about Dunne. Sad to see him go out on a KO defeat, but glad he might the right decision and retire. Dunnes legacy won't only only be the titles he won in the ring, but also the fact he kicked started the revival we have experienced in Irish boxing.
lads this is boxing wouldnt be too surprised at all if he comes back he defo hasnt made enough money to set himself up for life if he doesnt though ...then i have t say fair play to him for on his career he was the reason me and the bro got into boxing them few year ago
It wont be long until the dunne fans see him working again me thinks maybe in the ring in a years time or commentating on RTE pro-boxing in april.
