There are no big ticket sellers over here in the upcoming paid ranks. It is a shame to young pros out there boxing is no longer the sport that every man would watch. Yes there are the exceptions but most dont get the media coverage the need to shift the tickets to the part time fan. Even take Carlos into this his last 2 fights were on a Sky Sports bill but for the time being he has yet to make the air time given which doesn't help even if they gave a minute on every fight on the card it will be better for those fighters there to build up there fanbase and sell more tickets.
None of them have that X Factor like a David Haye that the public will buy into. I look at the trio of the Hylands and I think about it this recession has ****ed them up. No doubt about it they have the talent and out of them alone you could get a number of fights on TV for them per year but with money being tight it is a no go at the moment. If your not in with Peters on his limited RTE dates then for the rest it is by word of mouth and local interest. I think Peters will come back in for the Hylands and try and get them on big Hyland card on RTE some time this year the lads will sell out the stadium no doubt about it.
Co promotions have to be the way to go in the not too near future between Irish and even UK promoters. I can see a promoter coming here and putting on a bill with Peters that will go live on SKY.

 

Duddy in action
9 March 2010 - By Steve Wellings Derry middleweight John Duddy will continue his quest to challenge for a World Title on Saturday, March 13 when he meets Michael Medina over 10 rounds.
Beaten only once in 26 outings (two draws), 23-year-old Medina offers solid credentials and a big punch but will have his work cut-out attempting to derail the Duddy express. The bout will take place on the undercard of the Manny Pacquaio-Joshua Clottey stadium event in Texas.
Duddy has made two ring outings since losing his unbeaten record to unheralded Billy Lyell in April 2009. A routine points win over Michi Munoz was followed by a first round mauling of Mexican Juan Astorga which served to freshen up the Irishman as he eyes the likes of Kelly Pavlik, Sebastian Sylvester and Felix Sturm.
Duddy’s manager Craig Hamilton told the Belfast Telegraph that the team had considered an offer from Frank Warren to challenge Irish light-middleweight champion Neil Sinclair. That bout would have taken place in Belfast with John making a long awaited return to Irish shores, but Hamilton admitted that appearing on a major Top Rank show made more financial sense.
“Millions around the world are going to be watching this show,” he added, “and Medina is a step-up in class from the last fight. John has told me to get whoever I want and he’ll knock them down.
“It looks like John is on a roll again and I believe that I can get him to where he wants to be this year and that’s fighting for a world title,” said Hamilton.
Duddy currently sits at number 12 in the WBO ratings yet languishes at 28th in the independent BoxRec standings. His sole professional conquer Lyell went on to challenge Sebastian Sylvester for the IBF crown in Germany, falling in the 10th round following a brave effort. A solid win over a high profile contender will hopefully propel Duddy towards a similar opportunity.
Standing in the way of career progression is 23-1-2 (18 KO’s) Medina - who calls himself the “Murder Man” and has a more than respectable knockout ratio. He has done much of his work in the lower echelons of the middleweight division but did extend unbeaten Top Rank prospect Vanes Martirosyan the full 10 rounds in 2008. Michael was handily beaten by most accounts, yet lasted the distance with a touted opponent and has won five in a row since, four via stoppage.
His vaunted power and aggression will no doubt make for some uncomfortable moments early on as John’s defensive skills are tested. Once 30-year-old Duddy finds a rhythm and incorporates his solid jab he should be able to find a way home, winning fairly clearly on points and edging closer to a shot at a recognised world belt.

In the excellent weekly 'Seconds Out' Column in the Irish News there was a very good write-up on an event that will take place this Friday in Belfast. It is a talk given by writer Barry Flynn who will speak on the history of 'Boxing in Belfast'. The event will be also feature a number of former champions who will share tales of their time in the ring.

Interestingly, the aims of the newly formed 'Belfast Boxing Ring' is to explore how the history of boxing in the city can be acknowledged permanently - hopefully through a series of exhibitions, murals, plaques and statutes throughout Belfast.

The talk will take place at the Colin Glen Trust on the Stewartstown Road (situated at the entrance to Glengoland Estate) commence at 7.30pm this Friday 12th March and is organised by the West Belfast Historical Society. Admission is free.

It should be a very interesting evening, and the aims of this initiative are very worthy, please pass on to all local boxing fans so that it can get good support.

 

Not always. Some promoters give a flat fee. Others give a mix of ticket and cash. The reality is that boxing is not like other sports. People support a football team, people support golf, but for a boxer to truly be professional he has to develop his own fanbase. Not just boxing fans, but fans of that boxer. If you asked half the people leaving the O2 after a Dunne fight had they ever been to see another boxer they would tell you no. The lesson from that is that boxers need to get out there and publicise themselves. They have to dress properly, talk correctly and make alot of public appearances to do that.

I dont think the party is over, I just think we need more structure. We need to know longer in advance when there is a show coming up.
I dont think 18 shows is sustainable unless there is more forward planning and spread of bills around the country.
Myself and Steve are working on some things at the moment that will hopefully aid the promotion of the sport in terms of recognition and profile of boxers, the Irish title etc . But it is still early days.

Was talking to Pat Magee, he said that there should be an announcement on Brian in the next week or two. Exciting stuff. lets hope it doesnt clash with McCloskey. Imagine the two on one card? wouldnt be the easiest thing to put together though

 

I see it this way- if boxers want to build profile they need fights and if they want fights they have to drop their purses??? or renegotiate. if i was a fighter and a promoter had TV and garanteed press build up id fight for nothing... like the way some of journo's write for nothing for various publications to raise a profile...But its not all about ticket sales thats what covers the purses promoters need sponsorship to cover venue, advertising and in cases at the moment tv filming...

Papers are even tight at moment and boxing press wise suffering...
