Cheers for the links Ardy:good What does everyone think of this IABA debacle? This merrygoround of coaches is a bloody farce - what are the young boxers to make of it - if every time they turn around a coach is getting replaced and then someone else is coming in with their own ideas etc....
I enjoy quality boxing, I am not going to get on a plane and put my life in danger by flying to Belfast to watch a poor imitation of Junior Witter beat up some poor unfortunately Lativan. I would rather the tranquil haven that is Limerick, there I can be assured of my personal safety and a cracking night of boxing. Now if ye added some quality to the bill like like the debut of Nathan Farrell, or Kieran Farrell versus Jamie Conlan for the Irish super flyweight title because I believe Conlan is more than ready to step up, or Kieran Maher whhhhallopin the part-time surfer and lets not forget Stephen Haughian battling Chris O'Brien for the Irish welterweight title even an eliminator against 'Thumpin' Willie Thompson, then I would be over in a shot. :deal
u should b a match maker slappy cant wait til the kings hall... but is it 4th or 11th june ... there seems confusion here men:good
Nobody who labels Paul McCloskey a poor imitation of Junior Witter should be allowed anywhere near matchmaking
Jaysus lads you all talk too much. It took me ages to get caught up there. Plenty of buzz around Irish boxing at the minute though!
Is the IABA really that corrupt. werent people giving out about O'Rourke during the Nationals aswell....
Martinez's speed will shock pavlik By Pat Myler Saturday April 17 2010 IRELAND'S talented middleweight trio of John Duddy, Andy Lee and Matthew Macklin will be taking a keen interest in the outcome of tonight's world championship clash between Kelly Pavlik and Sergio Martinez. All three are anxious to move closer to title contention and, if the cards fall right, one of them could be stepping up for the chance of his fighting life before the year is out. Pavlik, though still ranked No1 in the division, has lost some of his former fearsome reputation and many are predicting that Martinez, born in Argentina and based in Spain, will pull off an upset win in Atlantic City. Southpaw Martinez, current holder of the WBC light-middleweight title, is stepping up a division to try and capture the WBC and WBO middleweight belts from Pavlik. "This could be a big mistake for Pavlik," said Martinez. "I don't think he fights well against boxers with fast hands and feet like me. He was outboxed by Bernard Hopkins, and I am 10 years younger and more than 20pc faster than Hopkins. I am supremely confident." Of the Irish contenders, Duddy stands the best chance of squaring up to the winner, but only if he manages to topple unbeaten Mexican Julio Cesar Chavez Jr at San Antonio's 15,000-seater Alamodone on June 26. The New York-based Derryman has his faults, especially in defence, but he's an exciting scrapper with solid box-office appeal, and that could be enough to ensure he cashes in by beating Chavez. Chavez, son of the legendary Julio Cesar, has a formidable looking record of 41 consecutive wins, 30 inside the distance, but that could be deceptive. He hasn't met anyone of real championship class. Macklin, who is rated in the top 10 by all the major bodies, is currently sidelined with a broken nose suffered in sparring, but has set his sights on a world title shot. He decided to relinquish his European middleweight title, and Britain's Darren Barker picked up the vacant crown last weekend by beating Affif Belghecham, who is not unknown to Irish fans. Last November, the Frenchman was well outscored by Andy Lee, but he had the Limerick favourite in trouble in the last round and Andy was mightily relieved to hear the final bell. Lee will be back in Limerick on May 15 to face an as-yet unnamed opponent, and he's targeting a chance to take the European title from Barker, who he beat in the 2004 European amateur championships in Croatia. "If Brian Peters could bring that fight to Limerick, it would be huge for the city, but I'll fight him in his back garden if needs be," said Lee. "I'm confident of winning wherever it happens." Back to tonight's title fight and Pavlik's bid to prove he hasn't lost the ability that once had him rated among the world's best pound-for-pound fighters. Since rocketing to stardom with a knockout of Jermain Taylor three years ago, Pavlik beat a trio of overmatched challengers before suffering a shock loss to veteran Bernard Hopkins. A persistent hand infection kept him sidelined for several months, but he came back with two wins over moderate opponents and insists he's not afraid to face anybody. "The flak is going to be there, there's nothing I can do," he said. "Now I'm going in with a very good fighter and when I dominate him and win, I'll be right back on track." Pavlik (36-1) is the bookies' favourite, but I wouldn't be surprised if Martinez, who has 44 wins, two losses and two draws, shows the speed and the skill to snatch the titles on a close decision.
