Ya same here, I thought McCarthy was a bit hard done by that night. Still time is on his side, I hope he wasn't too down trodden by it (he looked sickened at the time) because he's a terrific prospect.
I'm gonna guess that Paddy was only thinking in terms of our men and meant Carruth. Of course Katie has achieved more in the Women's game than young Ward aswell, then again she has far more accomplishments in the amateur game than Carruth himself and is only missing that Olympic medal.
Barry McGuigan: "Frampton can unite the people" Submitted by Steve Wellings on 5 May, 2010 - 20:00 This content is protected Barry McGuigan believes his super-bantamweight charge Carl Frampton has all the tools to succeed at the very top. Speaking through his boxing column in Saturdays Daily Mirror, McGuigan sees Frampton breaking through the political divide to unite Belfast behind a new hero. The people of Belfast know their boxing. I know a great fighter when I see one, opined Barry. He has the X factor in spades and will be as big as I was, but in a new Belfast. This is the epitome of the modern Northern Ireland, fighting for a shared future in which political tension is a thing of the past. 23-year-old Frampton is from the traditionally Loyalist Tigers Bay area of North Belfast yet trains with Gerry Storey just minutes up the road in the Nationalist New Lodge estate. McGuigan was at Carls Midland ABC amateur club recently taking his protégé on the pads and answering questions. Carl can fight aggressively or off the back foot and when guys exchange with him he can knock them out with counter punches, said Barry. This content is protected I dont want to change him too much because what he did as an amateur worked. I dont want to lose the things he did well but gradually improve his ability to come forward a bit more and inject more pace into his work. That will all come with time and quality sparring thats where you learn the skills. Im thrilled about his improvements and I really want to get him out in Belfast. After turning pro I made my name at the Kings Hall in Belfast [fighting there seven times], he continued, in the Mirror. I was seen a unifying force, a young fighter who represented all creeds and religious persuasions. Had it not been for the Troubles, I would have been no different form any other young boxer trying to make a name for himself. I would have been just like Frampton in fact. This content is protected Carl is currently 5-0 (3 KOs) as a novice professional, but just watching the intensity in his training, obviously chilling punch power (Barry says Carl punches harder than he did as a pro) and willingness to improve his style, Frampton will soon be knocking on the door of the British title. I have not been so excited about a young Irish fighter for a long time, concluded McGuigan. This content is protected This content is protected This content is protected
McCloskey ready to defend European crown at The King's Hall Thursday, 06 May 2010 This content is protected European Light Welterweight King Paul McCloskey has no intention of abdicating his throne when he faces mandatory challenger Giuseppe Lauri at The King's Hall, Belfast on Friday, June 11th. The undefeated Dungiven southpaw stretched his perfect record to 20 straight wins last time out with an impressive stoppage victory over Daniel Rasilla to capture the European crown and he says he's ready to fulfill another career milestone by headlining at the King's Hall next month. To headline a bill at a legendary venue like The King's Hall is a dream come true, said McCloskey. It's such a historic venue and all the top boxers have fought there down through the years so to headline a bill there will be special. I fought on the undercard there when John Duddy beat Howard Eastman and I actually got to make my pro debut there in 2005 so it is nice to be able to go back there in the main event on a big night of boxing. McCloskey however is under no illusions that experienced Italian Giuseppe Lauri will be out to spoil the party and says he won't be taking anything for granted. "He is a tough, experienced customer and has only been beaten by the top guys like Ricky Hatton and Junior Witter. He has been at this level for a long time so he knows what it's all about and I know it won't be easy but as long as I perform to my best on the night then I'm confident that I'll beat him. McCloskey says he's determined not to be sidetracked by any talk regarding a possible World title fight in the near future. If I keep wining then I'm sure the World title shot will come my way but I can't afford to look beyond my next fight. I just have to win, and win in style to keep climbing the rankings and then hopefully a world title opportunity will present itself in the next 12 months. The June 11th event also marks promoter Barry Hearn's return to the Kings Hall having first promoted there in 1994 when the WBO Super Middleweight title rematch between Chris Eubank and Ray Close topped the bill. The Kings Hall is synonymous with a tradition of world class boxing, said Hearn. It's one of those venues that people automatically associate with great nights, great fights and great fighters, guys like Rinty Monaghan, Barry McGuigan, Dave McAuley, Johnny Caldwell and Freddie Gilroy. It's a special venue and to headline it you need a special fighter and Paul McCloskey has certainly looked a bit special of late. He's an outstanding talent and reminds me a little of another southpaw who featured on one of my last Kings Hall promotions, a young man by the name of Sergio Martinez and he hasn't gone on to do badly has he?, said Hearn referring to the man who defeated Kelly Pavlik last month to become the World Middleweight champion. The event will be live on Sky Sports and tickets priced £30, £60 and £90 are available from Ticketmaster and all usual outlets. So let me get this right? McGuigan thinks Frampton can unite the people of Ireland. Carl Frampton = United Ireland. Carlos the closet republican? :think :stir Nice article and a very good sentiment. Interesting that McGuigan thinks Carlos hits harder than he did!
fancy mcdonagh to beat healy well, will be great achievement considering he pushed fitzy close for irish title with only a weeks notice, also timms to win by late stoppage against sweeney
