Bit dissapointing if true. The only reasoning i can see from a Lee point of view is maybe he has a promise or an opportunity to fight a big name in america in say march/april. Seemed like a good offer to me though. I'd be confident of Lee handling duddy, not so confident of him against Macklin (but I'd still be shouting for him)...
Dont know lads this smacks abit of sour grapes from Peters he couldnt make these fights happen in Ireland and is a bit pissed that the boys want to do it in america where lets face it there may be less money but will be alot more exposure for the winner. Also if a duddy lee fight happens i am sure that the winner would want a world title shot as their next fight,Not a shot at a very dangerous Macklin. I wonder how this release will affect relations between Peters, Duddy and Lee i mean he more or less called both guys cowards...Not so cool. For the record i rate Macklin above Lee then Duudy.
I honestly think they are mad to turn it down, Duddy vs Lee (both getting paid a mininum of 100,000) then the winner of that fight Matthew Macklin for the European Title (Which is another 100,000) Thats a hell of a lot of money for 2 fights and both live on RTE (which are now doing there shows live online for free and to be seen worldwide). and im sure Peters can swing it for the UL in Limerick giving Lee home advantage, Sure a fight with Macklin vs Lee or Duddy would most certainly be a world title elimanator anyway,
Good post. Any attempt to defend Lee's choice is simply clutching at straws imo. Being a massive Andy Lee fan, this hurts a lot. It's inexcusable.
It's ridiculous. All along he has been defending his fights against journeyman saying he's staying active and waiting for the big fights to come around. Now he has the chance to fight for the European title and he wants none of it. The mind boggles.
Maybe Macklin and Peters should stay in the UK and find out who is the best british middle weight is. The new yorkers will never fall for Macklins fake irish accent anyways.....
Is anyone really interested in the fight in America though? Outside of either Duddy and Lee I don't think so and I don't see any of the major TV networks running with it as a main event. The quotes from Duddy's manager in this piece suggest that it's still a long way from happening in the US. http://www.irishcentral.com/sport/John-Duddy--Andy-Lee-negotiations-ongoing-104076654.html I just want to see them fight wherever it happens!
It is great news that Peters and RTE were prepared to stump up the big money for these two potential match ups. RTE are really backing Irish boxing which is brilliant especially post-Dunne and in this current economic climate. And the two match-ups that were being proposed are excellent 50-50 fights - which is what us boxing fans want to see. As for Lee-Duddy not happening. I can understand why Duddy didnt agree to it as he could probably make more in a big money fight on an Arum card against someone like Yuri Foreman. I am somewhat bewildered why Lee turned it down, as I see Lee as the slight favourite with Duddy and I cannot see bigger money or options on the line for him elsewhere. And the Macklin fight would be a great one for Lee, if he could get past Duddy - Macklin is beatable and it would surely lead to a world title fight if he beat Macklin. If he lost well, no shame there and he would have had two good paydays fighting on Irish soil.
Your right about the grapes I think Peters knows andy wont be back for a while so he took the oppertunity to get his boys name out there... As for future relations If Lee wants to fight in ireland again Peters is really the only man that will make it happen so they will work together in the future
Lee shouldnt have to fight Duddy to get a shot at the euro crown he has done what Peters asked him to do, win two fights in Ireland then get a title shot.He has fought three fights and first barker then macklin get the shots before him. I wonder if Andy was offered the euro crown against Macklin straight without the duddy fight would he take it.If he was offered that and turned it down we would all have a right to give out him it then. Cant wit to hear the replies freom Duddy and Lee in the next few days if nothing else all this is entertaining.
In all fairness to have the opportunity of getting 200,000 for 2 fights. (a bird in the hand and all that) At the end of the day, They get offered a world title fight and depending on purse bids which could be anything, like the Purse bids for Dunne - Poonswat were only around 50k split between fighters 60%-40%. So why risk a 2 fight deal worth 200,000 and the strenght of a "ah i might get a call to fight for a world title" Its stupid and i think Lee and Duddy are stupid to turn it down, Who else is gonna give them that amount for 2 fights??
Considering Andy's recent level of opposition I think the offer of "beat Duddy and you will get a shot at the European title" is quite fair...possibly even generous to Andy.
Thats what i was thinking but it doesnt make much sense to me as we are all agreeing that Macklin is the best of the three at the moment so why feel the need to knock the other two just to build his own man....Peters should consentrate on getting Matthew that world title shot and not be bothered about what the other two are doing. I hope none of the two lads take it personally as i would love to see both fighting here agin soon and as Paddy suggested Peters is the only man to make that happen.
why cant the fight b in kings hall ... duddy packed the place last time he fought there... 7000.... duddy will smash lee to pieces me thinks... com on lee com north and get a hammering:good [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dera-980Rus&feature=related[/ame] [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KTWpHXLIFoo&feature=related[/ame]
