I enjoyed it myself. The attendance was a big let-down, there's no getting over that.

But I go to enjoy the scraps, and Healy-Moore was a good 'un while it lasted. Jamie looked surprised when Healy caught him a few times in the first.
We saw star quality from Paulie Hyland, he could have done no more.
Kiko Martinez and Lante Addy was a fine scrap, I only had Kiko winning by a round.

Spike was sick with the flu the week before the fight, he was raging with himself with his performance 'cos he didn't feel as strong as usual. But he looked very impressive in parts, he's a cracking body-puncher. His opponent has a head made on concrete, a squat body and long arms. Nobody, and I mean nobody, will knock him out ever.

The way I see it is that the show was never going to be perfect. It most certainly wasn't. But the lads who I sat with said they enjoyed the action.

It's a learning curve for any fella putting on a show. If he didn't have to deal with TV, then the expectations wouldn't have been as high as they were. But TV meant attracting a fighter with the calibre of Jamie Moore. If it raises the profile of Irish titles, it was worth it.

It will get better, it always does. People have a right to complain if they feel they didn't get their money's worth. What Boxingdvds was saying will have to be looked at in the future, no doubt.

The arena was not conducive to last-minute walk-ups, so that will need serious consideration for the future.

But the positives: good action for the most part. TV commentary was very satisfactory, as far as the feedback goes.

Next its the ratings. If they are good, it means more action for us fans.

Any suggestions or criticisism, I would be glad to pass on. We all want the same thing, good quality Irish boxing.

 

Thanks Podge, what is the future plans of tv3 and Tommy Egan. Will there commitment to boxing continue.:deal

 

Sorry, marty, with all my shite-talk, I forgot to answer your question.

Egan is in it for the long haul, no doubt. TV3 will be the same, providing ratings weren't a complete bomb. Which they shouldn't be.

A card in the north is a really good possibility next. Should have more on that later in the week.

 

Thats good news. Who do you think would headline the show in the north, now Rogan has went in the direction of the English promoters.

 

I must say i had a great night! i wasnt expecting much I went along and had great craic. i do agree that it was under promoted i think i saw one poster for it in the window of tony quinns in the square....

 

lee's fight could be televised as well, so hopefully if it is he can put in an impressive performance to redeem himself in the eye's of the american public.

 

no i wasn't at the fights but i watched it on telly, i too enjoyed the hyland fight he look's a very good prospect and hard to hit clean. Regarding coyle i too would like to see him for a few fights but i hope he remains based in america because of the good training and sparring he gets there (he has the same trainer as andrew golata).

[FONT=Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]After reports of Verno Phillips vs John Duddy being a 'done deal,' I got a phone call from Phillips' trainer Trevor Wittman who said 'Whoeverput that out there (the BBC) needs to put the brakes on it, we are far from a 'done deal' although the negotiations are indeed going on."

The issues Wittman mentioned include:

Irish Ropes wants to stage the bout in New York, Duddy's backyard, or Ireland, his home country. After the very controversial majority decision Duddy was awarded after his bout with Walid Smichet, Team Phillips isn't interested in either, unless that concern is covered by big purse money.

Furthermore Team Phillips has the upper hand in these negotiations as Phillips is the reigning and defending champ, while Duddy isn't even ranked at 154lbs. He'd like to do the same as Sergio Mora and drop down and 'cherry pick' a title.

The Duddy Team also wanted a September 6th date, a mere 8 weeks out, which Phillips rejected as he needs a full camp to defend his title. After all he is a ripe ol' 38 years old.

And of course there's always concerns with the purses involved.

"It's an excellent fight for us and for the fans. I think Verno's experience and footwork wins him the bout, no doubt," added Wittman, who also mentioned that "there is always the mandatory put forth by the IBF, so we have options for our first title defense, but the bottom line is the Duddy bout is NOT a done deal."[/FONT]

 

Thats bad news Shamrock, the way the newspapers having been reporting it here, you would have thought the deal was already made.

 

Checked upcoming fights for Lee on Boxrec and it shows as you state Sandwedge that he is due to fight on 8th of August. This is less than 3 weeks after the Gibbs fight in Limerick. They must feel that he's going to come through this fight unscathed.
