    Sutcliffe defends Rigo decision
2 April 2011 - Jonny Stapleton Phil Sutcliffe claims potential rewards made Guillermo Rigondeaux a risk Willie Casey had to take. The WBA Interim champion proved a class above the Limerick slugger when the pair met in City West on March 19.
The Cuban diffused ’Big Bang’ in less than three minutes and registered the kind of emphatic victory that had some suggesting Casey should never have accepted the fight.
The “too much, too soon” adage has been regularly employed since, with claims the former European champion would have been best served finishing his continental apprenticeship before being promoted to the world stage.
Indeed some pundits have argued that the man billed as the greatest amateur of all time didn’t just knock Casey out in City West, but knocked him back to the bottom of the super-bantamweight ladder. Sutcliffe, however, claims that Casey’s ego and body, and not his career, were the only things damaged last month. The Crumlin gym boss believes Casey has the spirit, skill and strength of mind to come back and is already plotting a second European assault for come-forward southpaw.
The former Olympian and Irish amateur standout turned coach also stressed Casey had to take his shot when it came, arguing world title shots can be once in a lifetime opportunities.
“You don’t get a shot of a world title everyday. You are lucky if it comes around once in your career. A chance to become world champion is rare and worth the risk. Of course I think Willie had to take the chance when it came. We admitted from the off that Rigondeaux was a class act and an exceptional talent. He could go on and clean up this division. We were under no illusions it was a tough test, but we believed Willie had a chance. We trained for 12 hard rounds, but Willie got winded for 70 seconds and showed pain to Rigo. Rigo then went in for the kill,” Sutcliffe told www.Irish-boxing.com before intimating Willie will be back.
“It’s just a defeat. Most fighters taste defeat at some stage in the careers. It happened to the greatest of all time, Muhammad Ali. Willie Casey will be back. We are looking at an eight-rounder in May and we will build from there. He will be back on the European scene soon. Willie was back training four days after the fight he as the spirit and the desire to bounce back and we have already discussed a plan of action.”
While Casey suffered the first defeat of his relatively fledgling career, stablemate Anthony Fitzgerald registered the most impressive win of his. The Irish Champion of the Year claimed the EBA strap by beating former Andy Lee foe Affif Belghecham.
However, despite becoming the first puncher to stop the former European title challenger, Fitzgerald has yet to win over some Irish fight fans. The Frenchman was livid after his continental reverse up and argued the stoppage was premature. Some pundits agreed pointing out Belghecham comes on strong in the latter rounds.
But coach Sutcliffe, who believes Fitzgerald can move to EBU level over the next 12 months, stressed if the former French champ wanted to make it to the end rounds he should have put up some form of fight in the opening stanzas. The Crumlin boss also stressed talk of Andy Lee is far from a publicity stunt and that team Fitzgerald would be confident of recording victory over the Limerick middleweight, who looks set for a rematch with Bryan Vera.
“I think the referee was right to stop the fight,” Sutcliffe said of the Belghecham stoppage.
“The referee is there to protect the fighters and Belghecham was wincing on the ropes and he wasn’t hitting back. People are saying the shots were hitting the gloves, but some were getting through. Anto had won every round up to that stage anyway. Everything was going to plan for us. We didn’t let him settle or get into the fight. If he wanted to come on strong at the end he should have defended himself to make it to the end. We don’t think we need to go back to Belghecham. We beat him and put him on the record already. Anto is champ now and if anyone wants to call him out we are all ears.
“If Anto puts in the work he can move up another level. People will see the losses on his record and that might put them off a bit, but he has the ability to make it. We called out John Duddy because we thought Anto would beat him and all the Andy Lee talk is not a publicity stunt. We would take that fight tomorrow. Lee might think that is a handy one, but he would be in for a surprise.”

    Irelands Helsinki Gold-rush

Following three gold and a silver at the Feliks Stamm tournament in Poland this week, Irish boxers in Helsinki continued towards world domination with five gold and a bronze at the Gee Bee Tournament in Helsinki to finish top of the medals table at the fifteen nation competition.
Our first medal of the day came at 52k where Michael Conlan got the better of England’s Tommy Stubbs on a convincing score-line of 11-5 . Gold medal number two was won by David Oliver Joyce who beat the Australian Commonwealth champion Luke Jackson 9-4. Next on the Irish gold run was Jason Quigley who beat England’s Anthony Ogogo, who lost to Darren O’Neil at the Europeans Championships and Paddy Gallagher at the Commonwealth games. Kenny Egan won his third Gee Bee gold on the trot beating local boxer Eemeli Katajisto on a score of 3.2. Tommy McCarthy was next up to deliver a impressive performance to beat Frances two times World Bronze medallist John M’Bumba by 12.9. Just in case such a mighty haul of medals wasn’t enough our ever increasing expectations, Ireland’s Jason Quigley and Michael Conlon clinched the tournaments best boxer and best technical boxer respectively.
So from a total of thirteen boxers representing Ireland this week, we ended up with a haul of eight gold, a silver and one bronze. Such good form from our boys argues well for the up coming European Championships and World Championships later in the year.
    Finals – April 10th
52Kg: Michael Conlon (St John Bosco) beat Tony Stubbs (England) 11-5
60Kg; David Oliver Joyce (St Michael’s Athy) beat Luke Jackson (Australia) 9-4
75Kg: Jason Quigley (Finn Valley) v Anthony Ogogo (England) 13-5
81Kg: Ken Egan (Neilstown) v Eemeli Katajisto (Finland) 3-2
91Kg: Tommy McCarthy (Oliver Plunkett) beat John M’Bumba (France) 12-9

Amir Khan - 'I'm doing this for my UK fans'

    This content is protected
    Amir Khan
has said that his fight against Paul McCloskey in Manchester on Saturday night was never about the money - it was to keep a promise to his UK fans.
"I want to give my UK fans a chance to see me," said the WBA light-welterweight champion in a hastily arranged conference call, organised to announce

"I could have gone back to America and fought there. I chose to come home and fight in front of my loyal fans who've followed me since the Olympics. I want to build my career in America but I did promise the UK fans I'd bring them a big fight. I'm doing this for my fan base. I'm not making as much as I did for my last few fights, but I'm doing it for them."
Khan said he was never in any doubt that the contest would take place.
"There was not one day where I thought the fight would be off. I've been training hard for the fight. They (his advisers) kept me out of the way. I've always been in the limelight from day one and you always get ups and downs. I knew we were going to get to the bottom of it."
Despite being pressed, Khan's chief adviser Asif Vali would not comment on questions about the perceived fall out with Sky, nor on the comment of Eddie Hearn (McCloskey's promoter) that the move to Primetime TV was "commercial suicide".
As for the undercard, Vali would not be drawn on that either, simply acknowledging that it has been "tough to put it altogether" and saying that he would hopefully be in a position to confirm the bill by tomorrow lunchtime.
David McConachie from Primetime TV announced that they would be handling all of the production, including supplying a feed for HBO in the States. He also said that the first half hour of the show, from 7.30pm to 8pm would be free to air before encryption kicked in.
Vali was keen to point out that there is a lot of public interest in the fight - he expects 15,000 tickets to be sold and was in receipt of an astonishing 300 media credential applications.

the amount of people that won't get to see this fight in Ireland now is terrible.

This isnt just a world title fight, its Ireland v England, its Paul versus the man billed as boxing's next mega star. It probably the biggest fight involving and Irish fighter since the collins era. I know Dunne and Casey Magee etc had world title fights, but this is against one of the biggest names in the sport.

    I feel gutted for Paul

Echo your sentiments exactly, 2 small points it was O'Kane that beat Ogogo in the Commonwealth's and Jackson didn't win gold either, I think.

the only time I watched primetime and they didnt use american coverage they had jim rosenthal presenting with Bunce and Woodhall and Rawling commentating. The latter 2 are obviously with sky now. Bit of a tip for anyone ordering it, register online. The night of froch vs dirrell I couldnt get the computer working. Registered by phone and the ****ers purposely take as long as possible. That call cost twice as much as what i paid for the fight
