COACH STOREY HAS BELIEF http://www.belfastmedia.com/boxing_article.php?ID=235 BARNES GUNNING FOR OLYMPIC BOXING GLORY http://www.belfastmedia.com/boxing_article.php?ID=236
Did an interview with Brian Doogan of Ring Magazine and the Sunday Times (he's from Fermanagh) Interesting stuff - especially in relation to working with Mike Tyson. Should be plenty more stuff on the site in the next couple of weeks. Also supporters club starts up again on Friday September 26 in Dockers again. After that were hoping to take it around the country - getting the clubs involved etc. http://www.irish-boxing.com/stories/august08/august08_doogan_interview.html
Thanks big ears, the Irish boxers couldnt have asked for a better draw. Potentially there could be some medals, its now up to the fighters to perform.:deal
Just listened to Mick Dowling on RTE giving his summary of the draw for Irish boxers. He reckons Ken Egan has a favourable enough draw whereas Nevin has a very difficult one. Due to their byes he reckons both Barnes and Sutherland have an outside chance at least of medalling. Does anybody know which companies are taking bets on winning a medal as opposed to outright.
I cant say I agree with Dowling, according to the world rankings, Sutherland is ranked 6 in the world. That must favor him going by the draw, to win a bronze at least.:deal
Sutherland has a bye in the first round, an easy draw in the second and then the Silver medallist at the World Championships(who beat him 20-13) in the Quarter-Final. After that who knows. I think he's capable of reversing the decision against Blanco, it was thought of as an upset at the time and while Blanco has proven himself to be pretty decent he's far from unbeatable. With that said I would favour the Venezuelan. One great thing about Sutherland though is he always has a punchers chance and that's not something you can really say that much in the amateurs. Darren is one of the hardest hitting amateurs out there at the moment. As shown in his qualifying for the Olympics [YT]nMf1CguuZWs[/YT] he either scores a count or hurts(or both) pretty much everyone he took on in the Athens qualifier.
