Irish Boxing

The scoring was awful at the olympics. Kenny Egan should have won the Gold. Barnes has more learning to do. Where as, Egan lookd to be the finished product. I love Ireland and Whales and hope to visit some day.

Yes i was there and believe me if i had paid for my ticket i would be pissed.Run Down
Iam Timms bt Alexander Ignatov RTD rd 2
Timms came out hard and after 10 seconds landed a good right to the body,this was the signal to Ignatov to stop fighting.Timms pressed but the guy did not want to know he threw 0 shots in the first round i **** you not.Promoter Gay Hyde went to his corner and told him to fight or not get paid so he pulled himself out much to the disgust of the crown.If he ever boxes in this country again there should be a boycott.
Mike Sweeny bt Alexander Dunec tko rd 2
Sweeney slimmed down for this one and looked good.With Breen and Magee in his corner Mike went about his task very well dropping his opponent with a peach of a right hand.Dunec did very well to get up
and fought on throwing some good left hooks but on the bell Sweeney dropped another huge right hand on the chin .Dunec got up and was saved by the bell.The second lasted 20 second as a swarm of punches ended the brave Dunecs night.
Alexi Acosta bt Kraastan Krastanov tko rd 2
Alexi started this one as an amateur trying to pick his points but his opponent showed good heart in trying to get the row started i scored the first a draw.Then the cuban came out landed a flush left hook and ended matters.
Jamie Power bt Stefan Stanko ko rd 3
Power gave away 7 inches height to his late replacement from Slovinia and set about his task well but after 60 secionds was caught by a peach of a straight right fom his 6 foot 5 opponent 3 more landed on the limericks boxers head but to his credit did not move the likeable power who finished the round very well.Power who is from the same camp as Andy Lee dominated the second with his jab and hooks dropping his very game and durable foe with 30 seconds to go and the writing was on the wall after being saved by the bell Stanko lasted only 20 seconds of the third much to the delight of the large noisy crowd from Limerick.
Luis Garcia bt Martins Kukulas rsc rd 3
The best of the cubans on tonights performance, cut the ring brillianlty kept throwing looping big shots against a very gutsy performer.On numerous occasions the ref looked at Kuklas who would then throw a hopefull roundhouse back at the classy cuban who eventually just wore him down at the end of round three.
Gary O Sullivan bt Segis Volodinis rtd 2
Spike got a great recepion from his home crowd on Leeside and the first three minute were competitive with Volonis landing a few good left hooks but Gary took these without any fuss and landed a big overhand right to drop his opponent who got up and fought on untill he got to his corner and then pulled himself out citing a sore hand.The officials didnt look to impressed but called it off.
Mike Perez bt Claudimer Diaz ko rd 1
Mikey Perez made a very spectacular enterance showing some excellent dancing skills on the balcony before entering the ring.The dancing however was the most effort he would get tonight.His Brazilian opponent had misrepresented himsel as a viable opponent but just a look at this rotund individual told you he should not have been in any ring.The bout (as i suppose we must call it )lasted 8 seconds a weak one two landed on the top of the brazilians head and down he went as if shot.The ref counted him out after i guess 20 seconds pleading with the guy to get up between numbers.Perez did nothing wrong his manager/promoter did nothing wrong but i doubt if this crowd will return...A shame really as it is a good spot and there were some good boxers here tonight.

Cheers Puca, it seems to me that the match-maker Tomas Rohan is to blame for these poor pairings. The buck stops with him, although the promoter Gary Hyde will get the blame also.I dont know what these eastern Europeans or Brazilians are being paid, but it must be pittance, as a across the Irish sea there are hundreds of pro boxers to choose from, the British fighter normally puts up a good show and yet lately it is very rare you see any on an undercard in Ireland. The Tommy Egan show suffered in the same way, with the undercard being stacked with inferior eastern Europeans fighters.This problem needs to be adressed if professional boxing is to get a permanent foothold in Ireland.Was it full house puca.:hi:

 

There has been no word from his promoter Brian Peters but he should be out again by October, I think there finding it hard to get him a title fight.

 

I agree,the guy who fought Power showed alot of heart before he was put away the same can be said for the oponents of Sweeny and Garcia who at least came to fight but aside fom these you were dealing with wasters.There was a good crowd there although not full.The live band that played between the matches were more entertaining than most of the bouts.
The atmosphere was subdued for most of the show with the exception of local Spike O Sullivan and Limerick boxer Jamie Power who brought a large following with him.

 

Its a ****ing shame to go to all that trouble, and then skimp on a couple of shackles, to bring in decent opposition for the undercard. It seems Tomas Rohan ****ed up here big time, but then again hes in Peters pocket so maybe its in there interests that the promotion was a failure.:huh

 

That makes sense, you would think that there's any amount of decent journeyman fighters in britain.How much would these guys need to get paid to fight in Ireland?

 

brilliant report puca... ko wins for all the home boxers...mayb sometime thats the problem with the matchmaking ...now and again it would b good if a match was made in a 55-45 spirit...instead of 90-10 fights...were the home fighter is always expected to win with ease...because thats b honest..its a ****ing bore and a waste of time watching them...the causal sport fan..who came along last nite 2 watch the boxing...will most likely b turned of and not come back...:good

 

I heard keith cresham is fighting john waldron on the phil sutcliffe promotion, i wouldn't mind seeing the winner fight jamie power. I think Mike perez should fight someone like alex mazkin, robert hawkins, tauraus skyes or cliff couser. I also wish gary hyde will team up with brian peter's for small hall shows to be televised to build up profiles, they could put it on tg4.

 

Btw very good performence by garcia, i know kukulas is limited but he is durable and went 6 and 3 round's with heavy handed asikeainn and golovkin respectivly. The transition from am to pro usually take's a few fight's so that result impressed me.

 

Garcia was by far the best boxer on the night, he seems to have bags of potential.

I only paid for the cheapest tickets(€25, balcony) and this actually provided me with the second best view after ringside, so considering that I was okay with how the bill progressed. But if I had payed any more I would feel a little ripped off, particularly with the main fight which stunk tbh.

The match making does need to be improved but one thing I'll mention is that O'Sullivan's opponent gave John O'Donnell a tough fight not too long ago(highlights are on youtube) and seemed very durable there. I think he just couldn't handle O'Sullivan's power and knew the inevitable was coming sooner rather than later.

The reason for Eastern European opponents is obviously enough because they're cheaper than British. When you're putting on a 7 fight card and you get a crowd of around 1,500 it's not easy to get tough opposition with the money you have. With that said they're simply going to have to look a bit harder and I hope the show at the gleneagle hotel with provide some tougher bouts. I'm guessing since it's at a bigger venue and will bring in more revenue it should do so(despite a larger bill).
