Fair play for having a stab at that article Jonny but its a seriously flawed article and the argument put across has more holes than Swiss cheese. What exactly is the premise of the argument? That boxing is more expensive than other sports to air? But then you just give one example of a cheaper product, rugby, but what about other similar level "minority sports" What other sports to RTE air? How much do they pay for those events? What are the viewing figures for those events and how do they compare to viewing figures for ProBox Live? I agree with you about the IABA and the BUI coming together to promote the sport, but lets be honest the BUI are completely anonymous and serve little use to the sport apart from supplying referees and supervisors.

The thing I dont get with RTE they show the Eircom league week in week out with 1 match every week being shown live on RTE. What is the price on them broadcasting these games compared to boxing. There must not be that much difference. Unlike the Rugby for the Eircom league RTE have to use there own cameras and production teams I would guess it would cost around the same to air a fight. Do they get the viewers watching Irish football league games I would doubt any of the games would of got as high of ratings than the boxing over the years has. RTE have the money no doubting it but I think there is no one they want to back in the ring at the moment. Macklin and Lee is in the US. The Ulster fighters are backed by UK promotors. The rest arent good enough to back by RTE. Who knows what will happen in the future maybe they will back 1 of the Olympians if and when they turn pro but for the time being there is no one there to fill in for Dunne.
Just my view Slap! re minority sports as public service broadcaster RTE have to show them. So they would show basket ball finals because of a duty. They can argue the senior finals cover the boxing agenda. price and viewership dnt come into it due to the fact they have to show them
