because they born in the historical island of IRELAND and NOT Great Britain which makes them Irish and not British!

They have a right to choose ireland or GB!

I am glad they choose Ireland. :)

Also they represent the 32 counties of ALL Historical Ireland and not the 24 counties of the republic!

Ffs, have the Brits taken back two counties right under our noses while we've been watching their "olympics"? Typical.

As of right now I had no problem with the result. However I did feel that the first round was even and I do recall being surprised by the scoring of it. I would have to watch the whole thing in slow motion again. That's why I was annoyed with the scoring in Katies last fight. She was up after the 1st round if you watch it back in slow motion.

Campbell clearly won. Had Campbell winning the first round by 3

ok just rewatched the first round. Campbell definitely scored 5, in fact I think he landed 7 shots.
But in the replay - I scred 3 shots for Nevin in one single flurry (between the last 70 seconds and last 50 seconds). But the problem is it is easy in slow motion to see them but I can see why the judges would not have seen that score. Campells shots were scored at range so were easier to score. Nevins were in close in flurries in that round. Harder to scre. I guess I have no problem with the result.

Great Olympics for the boxers only complaint was would've liking to see greater support for nevins final I would put his achievement in reaching the final up there with katies gold and also taught he did enough to win

Glad you thought the same Luke. It seems to have been easily accepted, but I think peoples' judgements have a lot to do with what they are listening to rather than watching. I'm not gonna harp on about it, but overall I thought Nevin scored more shots

The Ulster banner is the informal flag of NI - NI itself doesn't have an 'official' flag, but the banner is still used as the flag for local government and sporting events. For example, the banner is used as the flag for NI football, commonwealth games etc.

They have no choice in the matter - amateur boxing on the island of Ireland operates on an 'all island' basis; some sporting associations have existed since before partition, hence they encompass the entire island. It's a bit archaic but that's the way some sports work.

The Irish amateur boxing association (IABA) is one of those all island associations - it's the governing body of amateur boxing on the whole island, so if you want to box you have to belong to the governing body, which is the IABA. The IABA is an affiliate of the Irish Olympic Council, the governing body of the ROI for the Olympics - because of these archaic all island associations, the political division of NI and the ROI isn't recognised, so anybody who's from NI and is selected for boxing automatically represents Ireland. There isn't any choice involved. Not that it particular matters to a certain extent - I guess they just want to box.

There is some contention in NI because 'all island' effectively means 'Ireland' - British identity is completely lost. But that's another issue.

If the likes of Barnes or co ever became professional then that would be a different kettle of fish - they would represent Great Britain & Northern Ireland as part of the UK, unless they were politically motivated to seek a licence from the Boxing Union of Ireland - it'd be their prerogative to do so. Though I so no reason why they would do that.
