True. But their nationality would be British.

Their nationality is whatever they want it to be and has nothing to do with whether they box under the BUI or not.

You can't arbitrarily choose your nationality. I hear Barnes is feeling a bit Chinese, maybe next time we see him we'll see the blood red communist flag of China? Or maybe not.

You can if your from Northern Ireland. As in, you can consider yourself Irish or not, up to yourself.

Yes I know what we can have - I probably wasn't clear in my original post - the default nationality of folk in NI is British, you can apply for Irish citizenship if you wanted to but you'd only really do that if you wanted to make a statement of some sort, especially in the realm of boxing; so unless these folk especially want the Irish Tricolour next to their name, they''d have a Union flag, and represent UK, in their bouts. Some have gone down that route, like Macklin for example, though Macklin's was more of canny marketing ploy for folk in New York.

Macklin was born in England of Irish parents, different situation.

With Barnes and conlon being catholic thew would probably prefer to fight for Ireland like duddy did but others from the north prefer to fight for a British title to further their careers

It's pretty much the same situation (or would be the same process) - Macklin applied for Irish citizenship, hence he holds dual nationality and now opts to fight under the Irish flag. More of a marketing ploy from the Brummie though to be honest, and a clever one at that.

Are they both Catholic? Not too sure, but even if they were, that doesn't necessarily mean they would go down the route of avowing their nationality as Irish over British. Conlan's brother, for example, fights under the British flag.

But we're digressing to be honest - my original post was a response to the guy who said 'they had a CHOICE' (the amateurs that is) of who they fight for. I was just replying that isn't really the case.

Incidentally, I think they could fight for a British title either way so long as they're licenced and of British heritage (which they as UK citizens).

    I don't understand your question.

Yeah thats why he has the tri-colour on his shorts when he fights. They fight for the British title because its prestigious and its an option for them. Im a catholic and if I was from Belfast I would fight for that title aswell.

No I don't care - my point was that there was no choice involved, the guy previously said Barnes & co CHOSE to represent Ireland, I'm just saying that isn't really the case.

Guys from NI when they turn pro can represent whoever - it's their choice.

Yep. And vice versa, to be honest, for Irish titles for mainland Britons. What do you need to be eligible? At least one grandparent from Ireland or something?
