This. It's been said that Ireland's greatest export is its people. So it's fair to include its diaspora. At one time in the 19th century 40% of the British Empire's troops fighting on foreign soil were Irish. Let's not forget Tommy Morrison and Irish Saul Alvarez.
So is the conceit of your thread how the coaching on the island and/or its amateur program are lacking?
No love for Dave Boy McAuley? It's kinda strange how Ireland is known for producing such strong, tough, hard fighters in the pros, yet our amateur pedigree is actually much better, most of Irelands great boxers were just that, boxers
I doubt anybody would try and make that argument IB maybe the opposite, how did an Island with such a good boxing history, never really produce an excellent stand out fighter more often It's actually a good question My city, Belfast, has a recent one so far in his career , Carl Frampton But there have been a plethora of Carl Frampton level talents in Belfast over the years, in Belfast alone, so why haven't they made it big?
i walked away on a bit of a downer... suppose u cant win em all.... hope trainor keeps fiting on:good
Well done Stephen Reynolds, how about an Irish title fight with Ian Timms or Michael Sweeney next ? Hope Trainor keeps fighting, he is a good prospect and he will come again, just needs to work on his stamina.]
JJ Nevin goin pro it looks like, strange timing thought he could of won the world championships, who will take his place now? Probably Deco Geraghty . http://www.independent.ie/sport/other-sports/nevin-pro-uturn-looks-unlikely-this-time-29580335.html
:conf It's a big world. I mean, I'll be the first to admit our Yank amateur program is ass. We have a dearth of true old school boxing coaches. (as opposed to MMA guys or s&c trainers who also teach a boxing fitness class or something and fancy themselves chief seconds) Honestly we have no business producing so many elites. Maybe it's just the sheer numbers, law of averages. Maybe our hype machine is simply more powerful. I don't know.
Well it all went pretty damn well. Plenty of people coming up to me saying the headliner was the best fight theyve seen in an Irish ring. Gotta be pretty happy about that for my first gig! http://news.boxrec.com/news/2013/reynolds-wins-small-hall-thriller-belfast http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HmZzU3HwAXI
Whos training Fitzy now? And whos managing/promoting him? And any idea what exactly went on with him and Sutcliffe?
