Yeah you are dead right there nutter. We did have a good level champion in Bernard. I don't care what anyone says EBU is a good level. It's not like we throw up EBU champions every couple of years. I guess I just feel a bit disappointed that it has gone wrong all across the board all at once. Boxing in this country is on the way back though. Just look at the Amateur success we have had. Add the Pro game coming back and our high profile stateside fighters and hopefully we should reap the reward over the next decade
Martin Lindsay hasn't slipped up yet, but then again everyone seems to forget Lindsay(I know I do all the time). However Irish boxers are really starting to up their level of competition, in the last year our best boxers have fought(in no specific order): Paul McCloskey: Colin Lynes James Moore: Yuri Foreman Martin Rogan: Audley Harrison Andy Lee: Willie Gibbs Oisín ***an: Amir Khan Matthew Macklin: Yori Boy Campas/Geard Ajetovic John Duddy: Walid Smichet Bernard Dunne: Felix Machado Martin Lindsay: Derry Matthews Jason McKay: Darren Barker Brian Magee: Stevie McGuire Now while some of our better established names have fought(and beaten) better names in the past, the likes of Dunne, Duddy, Magee. The rest of the fighters are stepping up to levels they haven't fought at before and many are enjoying good success. Martin Lindsay fights Paul Appleby in March and Matthew Macklin fights Wayne Elcock in March aswell. Bernard Dunne would of stepped up his opposition against Eduardo Garcia if not for the cut Garcia received in sparring, so Dunne will presumely move up in level again next year. Duddy's in a bit of a mess at the moment so god knows about him, Magee has got plenty of options after winning the British title last night. Martin Rogan could fight for the European title if Skelton beats Vidoz. Patrick Hyland should hopefully take a step up in class soon. Andy lee will be back in the new year with his cuts healed and will probably be given a good test. I'd like to see Daniel Edouard. Stephen Haughian got revenge on Grasselini recently and looks to be moving up the British rankings. Considering we still have the very promosing Darren Sutherland to turn pro I think that despite the setbacks of the last year or so, we've nothing to be worried about. Especially after the recent amateur success.
DARREN SUTHERLAND AND AMATEUR BOXING WERE STRANGE BEDFELLOWS http://www.independent.ie/sport/oth...land-finally-taking-on-the-world-1574492.html
its been a good end of the year...lets hope for future successes for mccloskey...lindsay..magee...etc...theres talk that rogie will fight skelton in belfast 4 euro title if skelton wins it this week....and that khan and the british olympians will fight on undercard:good
i just watched the local news...brian magee was interviewed...he seemed 2 think that there was a strong possibility that he could b fighting 4 the european title next year:good
DEGALE WILL DUCK SUTHERLAND-LAWRENCE http://www.sportinglife.com/boxing/news/story_get.cgi?STORY_NAME=boxing/08/12/15/manual_094947.html JAMES MOORE STILL DETERMINED TO BE CHAMP http://www.fightbeat.com/news_details.php?NW=22008
Jamie Moore has pulled out of Thursdays card. Have to say I'm a bit disapointed I was really looking forward to seeing him in action again. Hes getting his shot at the euro title in march and doesnt want to risk injury. Good luck to Jamie. http://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/sport/boxing/s/1085602_moore_spurns_warmup_fight?rss=yes
Does anyone have a clue of the running time of the bouts on Thursday. Usually I'd stay for the whole card but I have other places to be that night and I'll only get to see a limited amount. Just wondering if anyone can help me out here? Cormac maybe?
Probably already mentioned somewhere in this thread but do any of you lads know how many times Sutherland and Lee have fought in the ams? I'm assuming they've crossed paths before, no? What do you think are the chances of them having a Benn/Eubank type rivalry in the future?
Cool. During the Olympics, I got the feeling that Lee knew him alright. Be interesting if they do go one to meet. Personally i'm fairly excited about Sutherland in the pro ranks. Hopefully he'll do us proud.
Sutherland is fighting at Super Middle in the pros so unlikely that he will meet lee in the near future.
