Bit soon to be joking about an attempted murder on man who by all accounts was 100% legit and family man. I believe case mistaken identity but I'm sure will come out in next few days what happened. Doubt very much he's that stuck and needs to be double jobbing as trainer and security!!

Disaster that show is postponed and just hope this doesn't put a stop to Eddie Hearn move into Ireland as felt like start of something great at press conference.

 

I just hope any other boxing reading about this can find away to diplomatically dissacoiate themselves from any criminals. Whether it was mistaken identity or not I doubt very much that it would happen if Macklin and his crew stayed away from crime lords in the first place.
Some boxers are role models. How can you ever be a role model though if you are associated with the very type of people who make the streets our children grow up on a complete misery. These people destroy lives directly and indirectly. Boxing is a sport, a discipline. I know there is a bit of history with certain associates attending the odd pro boxing. And I am sympathetic to Macklin in a way, because its very hard to say no to a crime family who probably make a habbit of shooting people at will. But still I have no time for this kind of crap. Maybe this can be a lesson to those in the pro game who care about fighters and can keep them away from this type of thing.

 

Luke I'm sorry if it came across as me being disrespectful ....I was just trying to put some humour into what is a obviously a straightforward effing disaster. I'm a big Macklin fan. Followed him to New York against Sergio. Also feel very bad for Jamie, seems as you say a really good guy.

But you have to realise that it is very rare for someone to be shot is a case of mistaken identity. It is also very rare for someone to be at or near a major gangsters villa. For both these things to happen at the same time to a guy by sheer random chance he would have to be unlucky beyond belief.

The bigger picture is pretty bleak. Hearn and Sky were just entering the Irish market. There is no way the corporate suits at Sky will want to have ANY association, however remote, with this type of stuff. Even Hearn might be reviewing his association with Matt as we speak.

Unless as you say Jamie can 100% show that he was just in the wrong place at the wrong time his career as a Sky pundit could be over, and Matts renewed domestic career could be in jeopardy. All in all it's an effing disaster...and I can't wait for what that filthy rag the Sunday W will have to say about this.

 

FWIW according to the Herald young Hutch was apparently the intended target. The shooter must've been some seriously low-rent operator as Jamie couldn't look less like Hutch.But we still don't know what Jamie was doing at Kinahans Villa.
Good to see the Herald were at pains to stress that Macklin and Moore have no involvement in crime. Refreshing change from the Sunday Wankld.
More good news is that Hearn is saying he will reschedule the bill, so it appears the events in Spain don't seem to have put him off. Boxing in Ireland needs him and the big bills he puts on.


Let's hope the execs at Sky feel the same as Hearn. Macklin ...and the other boxers who will hopefully feature on his under cards...badly need Sky exposure. Not to mention Jamie's fledgling career as a Sky boxing pundit.


If ye can forgive the awful pun, Mack and Jamie seem to have dodged a bullet, career-wise, at least for now. But I doubt their respective careers will survive too many more brushes with this sort of thing.

Obviously Macklin isnt on that level, but it just shows that being a watchable fighter is all that matters at the end of the day

 

Apples and oranges. Different time, different man, different completely. In Britain good old fashioned 'respectability' ( or at least the appearance of it) still counts.
Machroom are bigger than any one boxer...a million euro outfit. Sky bigger again. The corporate brand image DOES matter to these people. They need to be associated with a global drugs syndicate ( even in the most indirect way, as in this case) about as much as Greenpeace love nuclear waste.

Do people think Andy Lee v Cotto will come about,he seems to be close to it.

 

Lets hope so.

Whatever happens, it will be a great pay day for Andy.

His height may give Cotto problems too.

This fight wont happen - just like the other two didnt happen.

Thats 3 of the biggest names in boxing (ok 2).
Andy Lee is nowhere near these peoples level. Never was - never will be.

Anyone with Andys best interests at heart should call on him to retire. He is going nowhere and risking his health. :-(

How or when did all this **** with Macklin and the Costa gangsters start? Did he know these people before he opened MGM, or did he just fall in with them over there? What started it all off? How deep is the association?

 

The revived European Union Championships started today in Sofia, Bulgaria. Ireland have sent a 9 strong team. Obviously the Ulster boxers aren't involved due to the Commonwealths, however it is still a strong team and there should be plenty of medals.

2 were in action in the last 16 today, Gary McKenna was beaten by a Moldovan but John Joe Joyce easily beat a Polish guy to leave him one fight away from a medal. Dean Walsh and Darren O'Neill (who was a late replacement for Joe Ward who has a minor hand injury) fight tomorrow. Both are up against it. Walsh has a tough fight against a Frenchman who won Bronze in the last European Championships (Minsk 2013) and O'Neill, who has had little preparation and is in an unfamiliar weight-class, fights a Pole who won silver in the most recent Felicks Stamm invitational
