For a right wing "economist" ( I know I know I'm being polite here folks!!....) you're vey hard on the poor beleaguered taxpayer. You expect him to pay for murrays keep when he's a criminal , in jail...and while he's not a criminal...on the dole, coz you won't let him travel to work....so every sentence should be interminable then eh?..bizarre...

Just for anyone interested: STB our resident er.."Economist" keeps referring to a thing called GDP as a measure of how "prosperous" Ireland is. ( I know, I know!).

GNP is also a measure of our economy. A better one. GNP crucially subtracts money repatriated abroad. Multinationals, the cornerstone of our banana republic, often declare an artificially high amount of income in our corrupt tax-haven banana republic. They then repatriate vast amounts of this artificial income ..approx 30 billion Euro per year....that was never really earned here.

( of course this economic trickery would not be possible without the assistance of scores of "over-educated" young chaps ...like STB)

Since Government debt is approx 150% of GNP (GNP being thetrue measure of the size of our...er .."Economy",) ....we Irish are well and truly banjoed folks. Well and truly Banjoed.

Of course you'll not here this from the likes of STB, and fellas like Moorser and McGuinty will no doubt continue to shoot the messenger...but hey...who cares.
Apologies for the hissing sound...that's the air leaving STBs tyres, folks!

What is your odd obsession with a fringe contender at MW and his American visa status?

Care to furnish us with the comparative figures of the UK and Ireland in terms of GNP?.
I know them, but I want you build an argument for rejoining the UK on them. You think the UK doesn't have foreign multinationals???

Isnt the UK's debt at historic highs? Less than Ireland sure, but we're still not talking about prudent fiscal management.

And if we were to rejoin the UK, our debt would simply be added to the overall UK debt anyway.

Seriously you've literally made NO logical economic argument for Ireland rejoining the UK.

In fact the statistics show Ireland is better off OUT of the UK.

As can be seen in the HDI.

When the statistics are against you, you should probably just give up!

    ..so in conclusion

Our average national income is higher than the UKs
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_average_wage

Our life expectancy is higher than the UKs
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_o...t_by_the_World_Health_Organization_.282014.29

Our educational system ranks above the Uks
    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/educatio...education-report-subject-results-in-full.html

and all of that leads to this.. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_Human_Development_Index

And you think we'd be better off in the UK??

And this is from someone who lives and works in London.

By "instilled", you mean actual logic and reason. then yes.

Its been instilled in me the same way not sticking things in plug sockets was instilled in me as a child...along with running out on the road without looking.

I have no time for an apologist article that bends over backwards to not blame the leaders of a country, with trillions of dollars of oil money, for the fact that its in a complete shambles.

Its one of the biggest energy producers in the world yet cant guarantee keeping the lights on in Caracas.

It has the worlds highest inflation rates and murder rates.

I dont want to have Ireland run by people with a similar outlook

I think the point of the article was to demonstrate the changes between the rich and poor that now exists amonst Venezuelans... that was much worse in the past.... all the same the south will create its own model..... one in which will be uncomfortable for the high earners... no more tax havens:nono:good

And when they become so uncomfortable, they leave and bring their money and businesses with them? Where will the tax revenue come from then?

But seriously though, this politics talks has to end soon, taking away from the thread.

Well come on the. Marty, dutchie, Moorser, McGuinty, and all the rest of ye...start saying something to do with boxing!?

The only reason things got distracted into politics is the lack of boxing input. So put up or shut up.
( actually I think it all sprang from me criticising Nevin so it's probably my fault really)
Did any of ye see Macklin fight at the weekend? How did he look? Any news of Framptons hand injury?

Come on the ...back to boxing...

    Macklin did not look good.

Struggled badly with a nobody. Maybe the punishment hes taken over the years has worn him down

Even if he never took any punishment, his shocking level of inactivity over the last 5 years can't be good for him. You might get away with fighting just once or twice in a given year, but not 5 years in a row.

He has basically become a part-time boxer. No good. :-(

Hopefully he is not finished, and more frequent fights can restore his sharpness......but any more of these " andy Lee level" performances and he'll have to do what andy has so far failed to do...:bbb
