Hes like Marmite ye either love him or hate him, personallitys like that make one thing though and thats money, people tune in either to see him win or get beat bit like Mayweather or Naz before, but one thing is for sure hes creating a buzz and hes making more money than the rest of the Irish UFC lads.
The november 15 card is shaping up to be a great show, firtz spike, timms Sweeney, pajo etc but i was wondering will this make ticket sales for a proposed Andy lee show a few weeks later hard to shift, Getting toward xmas people can hardly afford two big nights that close together,
Well it's aquestion of priorities. These two have been very inactive, particularly Macklin, so they have to fight. Maybe team Lee are trading off the risk of a smaller crowd coming out to see him so close to Xmas, against the benefit of rekindling interest in a big Lee -Macklin fight next year. The two of them getting out within weeks of each other should help rekindle a future fight between them, which has kind of gone off the boil recently and needs to be rekindled. Of course it would help too if they both win well, and look good doing it. No use if one or both lose or look very bad.
or how about both shows selling out because of the great interest in both boxers..think positive lads:good
True. Isn't Kal Yafai on the Macklin undercard versus some poor sap from belfast. I don't know who the belfast lad is but Yafai will muller him. Yafai is the best prospect I've seen in years. Absolutely brilliant. Probably too light to ever face Carl though. Shame.
luke wilton... lukes not bad...but is very small...a natural flyweight... hope hes being well paid:good
Yafai is a special talent and will put Wilton away some time between the early to mid rounds, but describing Wilton as a sap is a bit unnecessary. Wilton is a guy who was described by most on this forum as being rubbish in his early pro fights (I thought given his age he had potential to get to a decent level), but he worked hard and got himself up to a level where he's a genuine British level Flyweight. Unfortunately British level Flyweights do not match up well against World Class Super-Flyweight prospects. As for Frampton not marketing himself down south ?, I'm fairly certain after his last fight (or it could have been before) he mentioned during an interview that he'd like to fight in Dublin sometime soon. He's also been on shows like Newstalk & other radio shows in the South, but it's not due to Frampton not promoting himself on the late late or at any other time being the reason he's not got massive support outside the North. The plain and simple reason is RTE refuse to show boxing, if they had shown Carl's last 3/4 fights he'd be a big name here too. Just look at how many of our boxers have become a name since they stopped showing fights 3 1/2 years ago. No one that wasn't already established in that time has built a name. Brian Magee won the WBA regular title in 2012, not a word, Patrick Hyland fought for the WBA interim title, not a word. Stephen Ormond dominated the reigning Commonwealth champion (a man who would win the British title in his next bout), and then defeated an opponent far easier than fighters like John Murray & Kevin Mitchell did, and what sort of recognition did he get ?, none.....the general public haven't a clue who he is. In the meantime Lee's popularity and notoriety has waned, Macklin's has probably only been kept anyway alive through his links to certain undesirables, and as for JJN ?, well we only hear about him when he's getting his legs broke. The fact of the matter is a lack of tv exposure in this country is killing the sport. RTE made a profit for the first time in about 6 years there recently, and a lack of money in their budget has been their excuse not to show boxing the last few years. But don't expect it to return, because the ones making the decisions don't care about it. As for McGregor receiving attention despite not having a title. He's no.5 in the World for his weightclass at his sport (not just his sanctioning body, but overall), there are plenty of World champions in boxing ranked lower. To give a fair comparison his last fight probably would of been a title fight in boxing.
Completely agree lack of TV coverage since the recession started has been terrible for boxing in Ireland. McGregor is an example of what a guy can achieve if he is very good at publicising himself. But I don't think he can be taken as seriously as a prominent pro boxer. Let's face it, how many fights has he had? Only a handful I think. Anyway how many guys practice his sport as against boxing? A tiny number. It's easy to be in the top 10'in the world at what you do if there is only a few dozen doing it worldwide. Not so for boxing.
Few dozen doing it world wide, are you off your rocker or just genuinely ignorant. the chap has had around 20 pro fights in MMA hes been doin it years.
I haven't a number for the amount of professional MMA fighters there are in the World, but the sport is very popular and far bigger now than it was just a few years ago. Keep in mind they only have 8 weight divisions aswell, so even if the pool of fighters isn't that large, and it probably is quite big tbh because lots of athletes from sports such as Muay Thai & kickboxing often give it a go, then it's more condensed. McGregor has 18 pro fights, so more than a handful. It should also be kept in mind that in their sport they're much less afraid of losing their 0 (as it's pretty much inevitable anyway), so they often match guys tough early. As you find in boxing, when a guy reaches the stage where he's in competitive fights, he fights less often, so he can prepare accordingly for his opponent and get in fighting shape. This explains why MMA fighters often have less fights than their boxing equivalents. If people want to dislike McGregor for his attitude or the way he speaks or anything like that, that's absolutely fine. But dismissing him as an athlete or what he's accomplished is ridiculous. His field of competition is at least on a par to what Katie Taylor comes up against in Women's Lightweight amateur boxing in terms of both quantity & quality, but I sure as hell wouldn't take anything away from what she has achieved or how good she is, arguably she's the best athlete Ireland have, or ever had. Now can we please get back to discussing boxing, because this is almost as bad as that political nonsense that was being discussed a little while ago.
do u honestly think rte will believe they are turning a profit partly because of there lack of boxing coverage....i know yer not suggesting that by yer post but i mean how much were they forking out for a half a dozen shows a year:huh.... if the right opportunities present themselves... the glory days of dunne could return again... lets see how these 2 big show sell b4 xmas:good
Just because someone doesn't know about MMA hardly makes them " off their rocker or genuinely ignorant", I don't know much about badminton or tennis either!! 20 fights in MMA might be a big deal to you, but what is the level of competition in that game? Compared to boxers who often have over 100 amateur fights and dozens of pro fights? In a sport with centuries of history behind it and hundreds of thousands of active boxers worldwide. I take the boxer more seriously, that's all. But fair play to McGregor,I say.
You're the one going on about McGregor. I barely mentioned him at all, and I have no interest in MMA. Took a quick look at it to satisfy my curiosity. Looks ridiculous nonsense to me. Can't see any skill in it. Bunch of Nancy boys having silly school yard scraps. I bet the average fan is about 14....age and IQ! Now back to boxing indeed!
