The armatures did it again. Thirteen Euro junior titles decided in Russia. Russia win TEN, Ireland win gold when Michael Nevin beats a Russian, Scotland win gold and Italy get one, apparently a robbery over Ireland's McKenna. PS The papers and RTE were full of it. Right, full of you know what!
Sickening innit? I'm afraid this problem goes beyond boxingit's symptomatic of a deeper malaise in Irish society. Boxing success doesn't "really count". The country's future leaders..tomorrow's ' Irishtocracy' all go to certain fee-paying "Rugby" schools, and when they leave school join the right "golf club", thereby forging the right social connections to ease their passage to the top of Irish society...and so it goes. With the vast majority of Irish people being docile doormats, and the rest having a severe dose of couldntcarelessitis this situation Won't change anytime soon. Certainly not in your lifetime Marty.

Whitehouse's knockout pro debut PJ Murray - Fingal Independent Ger 'Crank' Whitehouse travelled to Dowpatrick Cricket Club to begin his professional career and he made a flying start, knocking out Jakub Czaprowicz in the first round. The 19 year old, although delighted with his win, lamented the fact that he didn't have more time in the ring. It was Whitehouse's first competitive fight in 9 months and so he would have liked to take the fight a bit deeper. 'To win any fight with a knockout is fantastic, but I would have liked it to go a bit longer just to get used to the professional game a bit more. I caught him early with some big shots which he managed to take, but I got a bit rushed before I landed the knockout punch.' The youngster enjoyed the experience and was in no way overwhelmed, something which he attributes to his vast experience in the amateur game. His promoter Tony Davitt is keen to get him back in the ring before the end of the year, no doubt encouraged by the start that Whitehouse has made to his professional career. 'I have nothing planned. I will leave that to my team and I'll be ready to fight whatever they throw at me, whenever they decide it's time to fight again.' 'The plan is to get a few more fights and he used go the pro ways. I want to keep learning.'
