Frampton set to make title defence in Belfast

A spring world-title date for Carl Frampton against American Chris Avalos could lead to a summer showdown against English rival Scott Quigg.
Frampton looks likely to make the first defence of his IBF super-bantamweight world championship at Belfast’s Odyssey Arena in February, although promotional issues have still yet to be finalised.

Promoter Eddie Hearn is hoping to stage both events but the Matchroom Sports chief has yet to agree terms with the champion’s manager, Barry McGuigan, and the pair have a notoriously hostile relationship.

While Frampton is due to fight Avalos, the mandatory challenger for the IBF title, Hearn is representing the American.

Hearn is seemingly using his deal with Avalos to force through a superfight between and Scott Quigg and Frampton next summer — should the Belfast world champion defeat Avalos.

“If we can’t agree terms, it will go to purse bids,” said Hearn on dealing with McGuigan for a Frampton-Avalos spring date. “If I won the purse bids, I’d definitely do a show in Belfast.” Purse bids are used to finalise the promotional set-up for a title fight when the governing body involved (in this case the IBF) grant rights to the highest bidder, and Hearn is confident that could play in his favour.

“It’s not just about being a deviant,” added the Matchroom promoter on his involvement with Avalos. “It’s about making Quigg-Frampton.”

Meanwhile, Hearn name-checked Gary ‘Spike’ O’Sullivan as a potential headliner for future shows in Dublin after the Corkman’s one-round knockout win over Anthony Fitzgerald last Saturday.

The Matchroom promoter admitted that he could struggle to find a headline Irish attraction for a 2015 show after Matthew Macklin’s shock defeat to Jorge Sebastian Heiland.

“Spike O’Sullivan is definitely in the mix in the middleweight division,” said Hearn. ‘You always need the headliner to hold a show and at the moment Matthew, whatever he decides to do, probably isn’t [it], unless he’s in a really big fight.”!

Working towards going full time at the moment hard to juggle when have mortgage etc but ill get there in 6 months time :good , I had couple weeks off work for this fight and made all the difference. Spike was always full time he just really put work in this time and with Frank Buglioni and myself in the gym, we have cracking sparring with each other.

Good luck with going full-time, Luke! :good

As a fan, seeing the improvement in Spike was quite shocking. It was night and day from his previous fights. Night and day.
It was like he went from the tin man robot in the wizard of oz, to a mixture of Naseem Hamed, Roy Jones and Mike Tyson!

I would always have thought that "speed" is just one of those things that you either have, or you don't. How did he advance his speed and fluidity so much, so quickly?

He's been working alot on stretching and he has stayed in the gym between this fight and his one in Boston constantly sparring keeping active. I think that was his biggest downfall was not keeping active and in shape and half of previous camps wasted making weight, for this fight it was all working on his sparring and boxing.

He showed that class last couple months in training and hopefully pushes on from here to where he belongs!

Thanks for the prompt reply, Luke.
Spikes performance just made me wonder how good he could have been if he'd knuckled down at your age. You make sure you don't wake up at 30 realising you could be doing more. Work as hard as you can, right now, so that however far you go, you have no regrets in 10 years time. :good

I know it was only a little over a minute, so we can't read too much into it, but I for one will be watching Spikes next fight with added interest!

Luke would you ever fight Spike? A few years down the road yourself v Spike in the o2 headlining a big fight. Dublin v Cork all over again. Or is it a no go for you to take on a fellow gym mate in a fight?

There's only three years between them. I'm sure he'll take the advice on board though.

    Not a chance.

I definitely won't make mistake of not working hard enough I kill meself in training take more after Stephen Ormond where need to be told to take day off, my problem was missing proper rest while working full time but in six months won't have to worry about that one step at a time 👍

Regards fighting Spike we are at totally different stages hopefully he passes torch on when I get to world level wouldn't like to fight him as he's a friend and neither of us would like to fight without Pascal in corner so that's a no. I see myself as young 27 live clean, eat clean never touched a drug in my life and havnt been in any wars at all so don't see why can't carry on fresh into my mid thirties.

Macklin turned pro a lot younger and has been in some savage wars so maybe slowed a bit in his early thirties but I don't see that happening with myself, hopefully ha ha . :bbb
