IMPRESSIVE LEE IN LIMERICK http://www.independent.ie/sport/other-sports/boxing-impressive-lee-lives-up-to-hype-in-hometown-rumble-1280732.html
McCLOSKEY FIGHTS IN LETTERKENNY 22ND MARCH http://www.belfasttelegraph.co.uk/sport/other-sports/article3400596.ece
Ardy, the journey from Belfast to Letterkenny takes just over an hour and a half, definitely less than 2 hours, with fairly decent roads, so it isn't unmanagable. I still can't think of a venue that stands out in Letterkenny for this show. One thing is for sure if Lee fights Wright in Limerick I'll be there - but no doubt tickets will be like hen's teeth.
IRELAND TAKE ON FRANCE IN NATIONAL STADIUM http://www.independent.ie/sport/other-sports/ireland-take-on-french-at-stadium-1281638.html
mickrick...you went to limerick .....did you enjoy the whole promotion ...was there a good undercard .... who besides lee and mccloskey impresses you or disappointed you...
Andy Lee is already better than John Duddy. Duddy should fight someone like Asikainen, Sylvester, Gevor or maybe his british compatriots: Gary Lockett or Wayne Elcock, some hungry guys that are on the frame, yet he only gets the easy way out. He didnt really beat Yori Boy at all (Asikainen just thrashed him in the 7th without getting hurt once) and his win over Eastman was a lottery. He should beat atleast ONE ranked contender before going anywhere. I´m not willing to rate Lee yet, and somehow I feel he won´t measure himself against the european elite either. It´s gonna be guys like Eastman and Campas for him too, and then the world titles. Matchmaking has taken too much control over boxing.
What ****ing rot, Duddy was ahead with Eastman the whole fight and is still improving. I have no doubt Duddy would have dealt to Falliga a little quicker than Lee did as well.
Firstly Duddy is Irish, so he cant fight British compatriots, but he can fight the the British fighters you mentioned.Second, Duddy has fought at a higher standard than Lee . Lee might well be the better prospect, but he has yet to prove himself in the trenches, the way Duddy has. Boxing is not simply about deliverance of punches, but also how you take a punch.Lee might well have a decent chin, but we don't know that yet, whereas we know Duddy has a great chin.
Ardy, I have no doubt either that handled properly at a sane pace Lee has a real future in front of him. I would like to see him cope like Duddy does though in range. Lee is great at creating his own space but a class fighter would eventually find his way insde and there test his abilities to not only take punches but to fight in range with short snappy explosions. I would also like to see Lee competing with higher comp than Falliga (perhaps Eastman) but still at a zone where he can be comfortable in progression before jumping into the deep end.
I agree entirely, Lee is still very much on a learning curve, and Steward is a little premature in talking about world titles.
Hello Fra - cards on the table, this was the first show that I attended in a very long time, the last being Benn/Watson in London '89 when I worked there. I am primarily a GAA man, however noone could have failed to be interested in boxing in the 80's with Hagler/Hearns/Leonard/Duran in the States and McGuigan on our own doorstep. I had been a lapsed/closet fan for the last number of years until the arrival on the scene of John Duddy (his father used to do the doors in Derry when I was running about there), Andy Lee, Paul McCloskey etc. Brian Peters has to be commended for bringing pro boxing to the masses, likewise RTE. On the subject of Saturday night's show it was disappointing that Mathew Macklin's fight was cancelled as he looks to have a lot of potential especially now that he's moving to Mayweather Snr's camp. I would like to see the level of opponent for both McCloskey and Lee moved up from here on, albeit not as quickly as Steward is suggesting. Some of the other fights on the card were poor enough fare and I missed the Perez fight because I went for a loo break (too many pints beforehand in Limerick). All in all however a good night's craic and only an hours drive away.
HEllo Shamrock, Vera seems like a decent opponent. I think he fought out of his weight catagory in the contender supermiddle instead of middle.SO he could give Lee a fight unlike Falliga [the run away kid] on Saturday.
I remember the ko on contender Ardy, and I think remember thinking at the time that he looked a better boxer than Condrington but rang into a big shot?
