Off the top of my head, full world title holders are Barry McGuigan, Dave McCauley, Carl Frampton, Wayne McCullough, Andy Lee, Eamonn Loughran, Steve Collins, George Gardner, Rinty Monaghan, Mike Mctigue, Jack McAuliffe, Dave Sullivan, Jimmy McLarnin, Johnny Caldwell and 'Nonpareil' Jack Dempsey. Although I can't remember if there's more or not. Bernard Dunne and Brian Magee won interim or ordinary titles, so we wont count them.
McCauly, Frampton, McGuigan, McCullough, Loughran, Monaghan, McLarnin, Caldwell are all BRITISH. So you're down to 8. And a bunch of those are dubious "Irish-Americans". Let me ask again: How many world champions from the IRISH REPUBLIC have there been? (ie, NOT British).
Put 'Sheep-dip Selwyn' on 'ignore' for crying out loud. What about Nick Blackwell koing John Ryder last night lads. A new big future threat to our domestic middles? Is 'Spike' eligible to contest the British Title?
Sheep dip Selwyn... that's a good one. All I'm saying is that Ireland is not know for it's boxing (or any sport). It's known for Beamish, horses running through council estates, men with eyebrows UNDERNEATH their eyes, potatoes, kissing stones, badly tarmaced drives (in the UK), and angry Northern Irish men with moustaches. And that's it.
I think Selby is vastly over-rated. A disaster waiting to happen. Wide open - will get absolutely slaughtered against the wrong opponent someday soon.
Before last night I always thought he was underrated. I really like him as a fighter, heś the sort of guy who will perform better the better the opponent. The only problem is the other title holders in his weight are quality.
