Michael Nevin the criminal won the seniors a few year back he was on the Irish team for a year I think. Great stuff Matt disgrace they wernt mentioned, what a team today I was more impressed by McKenna and McGivern, they boxed fantastic, Donoughue is something else aswel fairly similar style to Burnett imo.
I don't think he won a senior title. Think he lost to Dean Walsh in the final. In fairness to him, he had improved massively since his loss to JJN a couple years previous at two weights lighter! His conduct outside the ring has seemingly put an end to his prospects inside it! Donoghue looked special winning the World Juniors a couple years back. Beautiful, swift style.
BALLYMENA welter Steven Donnelly is keeping a close eye on Radzhab Butaev and Andrey Zamkovoy at the Russian Nationals in Samara this week. Both won two bouts each and are through to Wednesday's welter quarter-finals. They can only meet in the final, in what could be a box-off for Rio 2016. Butaev earned an Olympic quota place through the World Series of Boxing last season, while Zamkovoy earned an Olympic quota place through the AIBA Pro Boxing. Donnelly finished fourth in the WSB. The top two qualify for Rio. Morocco's Mohammad Rabii won the WSB top spot, but also qualified at the Worlds in Qatar. He must take the Qatar Olympic place. That bumps Donnelly up to third, with Butaev and Parviz Baghirov of Azerbaijan first and second. However, if Zamkovoy outperforms or beats Butaev in Samara, Donnelly could move into the top two. The Russians say that whoever wins the welter title in Samara is not guaranteed a place at Rio 2016 - that they will make the final decision. However, the winner will have very strong claims. The deadline for national associations to confirm their first batch of boxers for Rio 2016 to the International Boxing Association is December 4. The Russian Nationals finish on Sunday. So far, Paddy Barnes, Michael Conland and Joe Ward have qualified for Rio 2016 for Ireland. :good
Well done Matt. You might say the same thing to all the politicians who will come calling shortly looking for your vote. Good job. :thumbsup
JJ Nevin chalked up win number seven, easily outpointing Greg Coverson Jr, dropping him but couldn't stop him. JJ cut over the eye from a head clash near the end. Looking forward to 2016 when he starts to step up. Well done.
Michael Nevin has a real tough Russian in the semi, McGivern and Joyce have Russians too. The two lighter lads could progress. We are second after Russia in medal totals!
Agree nevin versus the Russian will sort out the gold, the Russian versus mc govern is very good and looks about 71k ha ha, I expect o donoghue to win it out that Ukraine he beat yesterday was very good, Two gold a silver and two bronze that's my prediction,
