I felt it was closer than that, had frampton by 2 but the first 7 were terrible and couyld be judged anyway,Carl was at least looking like he wanted to do a bit even though everything was landing on Quiggs turtle shell hide me defence, The overwhelming feeling this morning is thank f''k i dint waste my time and money going to that ****, Quigg fought like a scared novice and Carl didnt sem to be able to open him up, Carl has got to step up and fight Rigo next or jog on,Quigg can go bak to fighting at euro level with KiKo
I never used to take much notice of the people complaining about the Sky commentary, biased scoring, incompetence etc etc ...but after THAT FARCE last night ..... They completely overlooked how awful Quigg was. For example in the 7th he was made to spin completely around like a novice or a drunk in a bar fight. Quigg continually missed lunging haymakers and lurched forward like a stumblebum yet the Sky team never picked up on it. Worst commentary in a long time (When Quigg made Jamie Olive spin around like that the ref stopped the fight!)
What next for Franpton? After last night there won't be a Quigg rematch. For a start a rematch is not warranted...Quigg didn't earn it, and secondly no way will Hearn pay out for it after what was a disappointing fight overall....and in particular a disappointing performance from his own man Quigg.
quigg boxed a lot better than I thought he was capable off... and you cant help thinking if he had of started faster the result might have been different... to me in the past Frampton has always shown stamina problems and the same happened last night... either that's the way he is and theres nothing to be done about it or he has to try to incorporate something different into his training regime...the thing is now I think Frampton is showing signs that hes past his best [Frampton of 2 yrs ago would have flattened that version of quigg]... 29 is advanced years for that weight division:good
But DID Quigg really box better Fra? Doing absolutely zero for 6-7 rounds is hardly great boxing, is it? Think about it. We have seen this before for exampe at middleweight with Martin Murray. A boxer who is huge at the weight in his division can shell up, fight a 'negative' fight and it can be almost impossible to get him out of there - no matter how good you are. As for Carl the stamina issue is a slight problem - he hasnt a major stamina problem in fairness. He made all the running last night against a guy who was supposed to have an 'incredible' engine.Quigg did nothing for half the fight and still was knackered in the 12th - whereas Carl boxed his head off in the 12th. Carl is boxing better than ever. In his last 2 fights his in-out movement, footwork, control of distance, fluidity etc have been his best ever. Really top top class. Quigg was so outclassed that he did literally nothing for half the fight. He couldnt even throw a rudimentary jab for fear of being countered. thats how good Carl was. Quigg was totally aware of Carls superiority last night and it showed. A concern I do have is that Carl seems to lack a bit of strength at times and they are remedying this with too much weight lifting. More long runs would serve him better IMO. Also he has not put down his last 2 opponents now - maybe he is not the puncher we thought he was??. Doubt he can be successful at 126 anyway. Time will tell.
I think that if he goes up to 126 he will get his punch power back, I think at his age he's finding it harder to make 122 without draining himself .Just a thought
Frampton was always a good boxer but he has lost his explosiveness that in the past would have easily dispatched quigg...the fact that quigg showed the defence that he had was an improvement for him ...im not saying he is a rigo but he was competent enough to never look out of hid depth which I thought he was beforehand.... I don't know where Frampton goes from here .... a big fight against santa cruz would be a money spinner but is a fight he wont win:good
I think the problem with this fight was that there were too many bragging rights on the line. Neither one wanted to look bad after all the build up, which explains why they were cagey. I don't think it would be the same against Rigo, no shame in losing to him, but a loss to Quigg would of been hard to get over. Frampton was working (hitting the gloves or not, Quigg barely threw a punch at all) constantly jabbing, moving and tryin to make some openings. How could any score any of the first 7 rounds for Quigg when he wouldn't do anything except cover up. Frampton start getting into a rhythm around round 4/5. And when Quigg did start putting the pressure on, Frampton stood his ground, pushed Quigg (the bigger, "stronger" man) back, swapped body shots and took his best ones while looking like he was hurting Quigg with his. It was an easy win for Frampton, he had 7 rounds where all he had to do was throw more than 2/3 punches per round. He has to fight Rigo next.
Also, the rematch would have to be in Belfast. No chance for Quigg. He just doesn't belong at that level. Hearn was cashing out on Quigg. He has to fight Rigo. I could lose some respect for him if he doesn't take the WBA mandatory like I did Canelo for his shenanigans with Golovkin. Frampton has to fight Rigo.
Frampton v Rigo I want to see it. IF it is Carls last fight in the 122 it has to happen. Then move up a weight division. Even in defeat Carls reputition wont go down if not it might go up that he took on Rigo instead of avoiding him. It be a good fight and real test. Rigo and then Santa Cruz would be ideal for Carls next 2 fights and see how he gets on. Think the move up has to happen sooner rather than later.
That's not a unionist flag. It's just the northern ireland flag, in a sporting context at least. I understand nationalists don't identify with that flag but it is the only flag that we have to symbolise "our wee country". It is the official flag of NI football team etc. I really don't think people were being political by waving it. I think it was more a case of NI boys "on tour".
