RTE commentator repeats trick in final round of Donnelly's bout today. Quality, so consistent. atsch If Donno had won the last, he was through because of the warning. Never looked like winning it though. https://www.rio2016.com/en/boxing-mens-welter-69kg-quarterfinal-1
Yes Donnelly was never anything but a big underdog. Isn't the Moroccan rated world no 1? Also doj was always going to be unlikely to beat that Russian selumov or whatever. Those 2 results were pretty much unavoidable. But doj could have been revved up more in the dressing room to start faster. You pretty much have to win the first round in Olympic boxing. Haven't seen d Irvine fight yet.
Donnelly fought well but the Morroccan just bullied him in the end. The morroccan would make a fantastic pro!! Every punch looked like it hurt! I get where you're coming from with the Barnes situation. I don't think I'd go as far as saying it's a bigger issue than the Reilly situation, but I can see why you find the whole episode very frustrating! How did they think Barnes would be able to make the weight consistently for another week or so!? I know they might argue that they couldn't foresee that it would be SO difficult, after all he's been doing it for years. But I'm surprised that it wasn't suspected that this time would be extra difficult because of his age and the fact that he's been making it for a whole 12 years AND the fact that they already knew there was issues, i.e. WSB situation etc.) I can't help wonder how things would have worked out if say after the Worlds they decided to keep Irvine at 49kg and hope he'd qualify in one of the tournaments (Turkey/Baku) and send Paddy to those tournaments at 52kg. Could have suited BOTH lads better :--(
Irvine can't make 49kg any more. Caught between weights in a sense but he will grow into 52kg for Tokyo
No point rehashing it guys as its over but the new weigh in format that just came in for these Olympics didnt help the captain either, They were all due to weigh in Saturday as per usual but the draw was done in advance and the first time they had to make weight was the morning of the fights (3.5 hours before Barnes entered the ring) IF Barnes had had to make the weight 2 days previously he would have been "down on the weight" anyone that has had to cut weight for a championship can tell you this would have helped, Just one more thing that just didnt fall right for the team, Ifs and buts i guess....:-(
Didn't realise he struggled too. Makes sense I suppose considering his height. I still wonder if the decision was made just after Doha (where Irvine performed well at 49kg) could it have been done? You say he can't make it anymore, but that's because he's become accustomed to being that bit heavier now I'd imagine. I wouldn't be surprised if he grows into 56kg come Tokyo...a few years of elite strength training behind him by then!
The drip feed of the facts about Riogate continues. It now appears conlon is saying they hadn't seen oreilly in 8 weeks! Questions need to be asked about the mis management of our national boxing team.
Look he qualified for Rio via wsb. A completely different format. Different weight. 16 months ago. That's ridiculous. I don't know any other sport where this happens. In swimming you qualify for 100m freestyle by swimming 100m freestyle ....in exact Olympic format. In a timely interval before the olympics. Not cos you won a game of water polo 16 months ago. Qualification for Olympic boxing should follow this rule. Now I'm told oreilly wasn't even with the team for 8 weeks beforehand. Is this true? How was he even allowed to travel without a clean test? Every day something new gets added to the " how was this allowed to happen?" List. Im very disappointed with the team management in Rio.
Conlon tells all. All well and good mr conlon. But you were there mate.bwhat did you do about it. This is a team management issue. How was o Reilly allowed travel with the team! Who is responsible?
I think John Conlan got overexcited yesterday after his sons win, Its nice to hear an honest opinion from the team coaches but as iv already said i would perfer everyone to wait untill they come home, have a week or two break and then have a full meeting/investigation into all the issues that arose around this team, that way i believe we could get a full and non emotional story and hopefully stop this type of thing ever happening again, I would quite naively really like for the iaba for once to hold a transparent and full investigation and publish the findings, but i think we will have to see an outside company coming in to do it for us,then it will become one word against another as usual, On a brighter note CMON KATIE :bbb:bbb:bbb
Katie beaten on a split decision. Is it me that thinks the scoring is all gone more so pro based than before. I dont know i just rather the point scoring for punches landed more so than this system. I thought Katie won the fight it was close but to go out that way on a draw maybe it should go onto punches landed or higher punches landed per cent to see who wins. As for the boxing team there may well be a overhaul to the team and some people will have to go. We need some sort of change. Be it a refreshing of the coaches but I think with a new team of coaches it might be a bit negative maybe a new fresh face added might help but who knows what will happen.
You know me fra....I'm not happy unless I'm getting excited about something! 😀 But it does need looking into, no doubt.
Bernard dunnes and Kelly on the panel seem to be contradicting conlons version. They say oreilly WAS training with the team all along????? Wtf??? Either he was or he wasn't ....
