From the Ring lads Andy Lee is set to make his return after a nearly 15 month layoff against KeAndrae Leatherwood on March 18 at Madison Square Garden on the undercard of Gennady Golovkin’s middleweight championship against Danny Jacobs, RingTV.com has learned. Lee-Leatherwood will take place immediately before the HBO PPV portion of the telecast on the freeview broadcast, according to promoter Tom Loeffler. The bout between Lee and Leatherwood was put together by promoter Lou DiBella, who handles Lee. “We’re excited to have Andy on the show,” Loeffler told RING. “He’s fought at MSG (three) times before. He’s undefeated. We’re definitely excited to have him on the card.” The southpaw Lee will be fighting a day after Irish Olympian Michael Conlan makes his pro debut at Madison Square Garden’s Theater on St. Patrick’s Day. “I think it helps,” Loeffler said of the back-to-back shows. “I think it helps both cards — that’s the way I look at it. There will be 20,000 people at MSG on Saturday night. A lot of those are coming in from out of town. I’m sure a lot of our fans will go to the Conlan fight on Friday and then we’ve had a lot of requests for people staying there for the Conlan fight and they want to buy tickets for our show, as well. It will be a nice boxing weekend at MSG.” Lee (34-3-1, 24 knockouts) hasn’t fought since he lost his WBO middleweight title to Billy Joe Saunders by a majority decision on Dec. 19, 2015 in Manchester, England. The last time he fought at Madison Square Garden, Lee flattened John Jackson with a sensational fifth-round knockout in June of 2014 on the Miguel Cotto-Sergio Martinez undercard after Lee had been hurt several times. Alabama’s Leatherwood (19-3-1, 12 KOs) isn’t a familiar name but he’s won five straight since he was knocked out by Taronze Washington in the fourth round in 2015, a loss he avenged in his next fight. He was also stopped by John Jackson in 2011 in the sixth round. The 28-year-old Leatherwood has been active, boxing four times in 2016.
Oh no! A prediction of success by Marty! Ray if you're reading this - give up now - you're doomed laddie, doooooomed!
Andy Lee is coming out of retirement. He will certainly become the latest in a long line to prove the old adage "they never come back". Strange there wasn't more demand for a rematch with Billy Joe. Andy ran him very very close and was the defending champ. When you think of the demand for a Carl - LSC rematch, their fight wasnt as close as Andys and Billys...
A win March 18 will set up a check out fight versus GGG. A fight I in no way could see Andy winning but it should give him enough cash to retire and good luck to him.
Why did Andy go all quiet after Billy Joe took his title. He actually had/has a good case for a rematch with Billy Joe. Is there some problem with Andy I wonder? I mean health wise , family problems or something that kept him so quiet lately?
Very funny, don't know if Ray has the power needed to make it very far in the pro game but he certainly has the skill. So I'm hoping he has a bit of power once he puts on the smaller gloves.
Good talent but I would be worried about the fact he had 3 wsb fights and lost them all. Wsb is in my opinion the true reflection of how a good amateur will do in the process game
Theres a lot of other contributing factors to Rays lack of success at WSB. Who trained him? will his new professional team be better. Was Ray unlucky in his WSB opponents? How far will his opponents progress in the pro or amateur game. I know the jury is out with Ray but if he can tap into the talent that we all know he has then maybe, just maybe
Elite semi finals weekend and even with the large number absent still some good contests to look forward to, 56k seems to be the king of the weights though, down to the last 4 three have already won the elite crown in the last two years and the other lad (metcalf) has been in 2 finals,Great group but hard to look past the defending champ, As an outsdier i think tiernan bradley will give Dean Walsh a tough test,, Who else you guys got? Where? WWho did he sign with? Always thought he'd make a good pro. Im surprised more of Irelands top amateurs dont go pro. I was sure Ward would go pro after the olympics
