Anyone know if Katie Taylor is eyeing a unification clash with Delfine Persoon anytime soon? Or is the plan just milk one belt and then eventually move up? That would be a huge coup and would probably make Katie the instant women's p4p #1 (since Persoon has long been reckoned #2, just behind Cecilia Brækhus) Persoon has a tuneup scheduled in Belgium on Saturday, after which she may be due for a mandatory defense of her WBC lightweight title (she beat Myriam Dellal in a rematch this past November in a voluntary, having not fought in eleven months prior) sooner rather than later. By year's end, though, she ought to be free to put the green belt in the kitty - assuming Taylor is successful in her second defense of her WBA title in her sophomore effort across the pond in Brooklyn come April.

Promising start to the new year on here lads. Puca posting regularly, marty and dutchie found their way back too! This place was on life support for most of 2017. Might breathe some life into this forum again in 2018!
Ok Len so lets have a debate guys, The professional game in Ireland are we thinking its booming because we have a lot more show, promoters, boxers now or are we looking at the standard of 90% turning over and thinking who the hell is that? as i said previously the question seems to be can i win a youth or senior Irish amateur crown? if not ill go pro, In short are we happier with the quantity over the quality?
I'd argue that it's quantity on top of quality. The regular drip of exciting top prospects has continued as it always has (if not slightly increased with guys turning over especially young such as A.McKenna, G.Cully, and L.Crocker) And last year saw a massive influx of guys who, as you say, would be unable to win a Senior title. Is this a problem? I don't think so, especially if fighters can realise their limitations and not be all looking to get to 15-0 on journeymen. There's the potential now for the first time in decades for a proper Irish circuit, with evenly matched fun fights on smaller shows, the reinvigoration of the Irish title as a career goal rather than an occasionally fought for first title for top prospects, less need for foreign journeymen - and diamonds could be unearthed, rising through numerous domestic fights to make a name for themselves.
yea joe that seems the direction... these new promoters should go.... local rivalries ultimately finishing in irish title fites... if some1 is good enough to go beyond that level.... then look at the EU title as the next step up.... the thing is they need to keep these new boxers busy... or forget about it.... I don't know if these new promoters are making money...are they... because if they aren't they will walk away... and who would blame them

Good reply, I agree with the sentiment of this fully, Limited fighters having good even contests would make for a good night but unfortunately what we are seeing at the moment from social media sites and other outlets is these guys getting blown up out of all proportion as the next coming of Julio Caesar Chavez and then fighting Latvian binmen and been charged big money to do it,(through ticket sales) I understand about building a fanbase etc but there is the need to be realistic aswell,More importantly some of these guys need to stop believing their own press Maybe a type of super six for Ireland would be a good idea using some of the lesser known guys, the cream would rise and as you say a diamond may be unearthed,With the winner getting a shot at the Irish title,
Incredible undercard for the Frampton/Donaire card T MC Kenna vs P Sutcliffe Jono Carroll vs Marco Mc Cullough C Cummings vs Luke Keller Gotta be the best card ever in Ireland.
As regards the current resurgence in the domestic pro game. I just dont know enough about the vested game to comment on any input from THAT angle. One observation - I think its ironic that throughout history boxing has traditionally thrived under conditions of hardship, poverty and recession - yet nowadays here our current boom has matched our economic recovery! And the last boom - the "bernard Dunne boom" coincided with the celtic tiger! Less lads unemployed in boom times, (so you would think boxing would slump - why get punched frequently and paid infrequently when you can do the reverse?) .....but seemingly this is trumped by there being more money around for cards and media coverage etc A note of caution though - boxing collapsed with the celtic tiger - and will likely collapse again next time our "economy" tanks. ......and that day isnt far off.
So Puca me 'aul mucker ....care to pick winners? Im gonna say McKenna, Jono, Luke. McKenna cos Id pick anyone with a pulse to beat beyond-awful sutter...with apologies to his dad who couldnt half fight. Carroll cos hes good and McCullough aint all that great. Keeler cos he looks like Patrick Swayze!!! Flawless logic.
