Plenty of better Irish boxers than Mccarthy could do with the exposure he gets Marty ....

His fight is on Sky I hear.....surely you can think of more deserving Irish boxers? There has to be dozens of better talents out there. I mean have you actually seen him box?

Dunno about that. McCarthy has been pissed about by management for the last 2/3 years. Hardly been getting mad exposure in that time. Good to see him back in the fold now though. He's benefiting from a good cruiserweight scene at British level. Definitely has the talent to mix it with them. No harm in that.

I've nothing against the guy, it's just that he's been highly touted over the years and I expected him to be much better than he actually was when I saw him box. I expected to be impressed. I saw him box and he looked awful to me. Have you actually seen him box?

I suppose it depends on your expectations. If you thought he was going to get to world level I'd understand why you're disappointed but he never had that sort of upside. I was fairly impressed with his performance against Jon Lewis Dickinson. He then jumped up a number of levels and paid for it against Askin who's more of a Euro level fighter in my opinion. Far better fighter than his record suggests. Ever since that night McCarthy's career has been a mess with changing of management and fights falling through.

Massive opportunity for him to get into the mix at British level this weekend. It's definitely a winnable fight for him. He's actually favourite with the bookies. If he wins this weekend and then goes on to fight the British names like Watkins/Chamberlain/Camacho he's got a good chance to get his career back on track. Could beat any of those on his day.

Good post, and I agree with most what you're saying. I think the trouble with McCarthy is he believes his own hype and gets complacent as shown in the Askins fight. McCarthy wasn't in great shape for his last contest either, which brings into question his commitment to the sport. A fully fit motivated McCarthy can win on Saturday, an out of shape McCarthy could get stopped.

Not sure he believes his own hype, maybe he does. I just think McCarthy's laid-back personality filters into his performances and probably his preparation too to be honest. He can be ultra tentative in the ring which is frustrating because he doesn't get any stoppages because of it. I will be interested to see how he looks on the scales tomorrow. The fact its a short notice fight would worry me a bit. Needs to be switched on and fit for the 10 rounds fighting a guy who can bang like Riakporhe.

Don't think it could be considered short-notice, McCarthy has known about the fight for 6 weeks and had been in camp for his keep-busy on February 9th beforehand. If he loses it won't be through lack of preparedness.

Good point actually, had forgotten he had the fight three weeks ago. Came in lighter than usual on the scales too. I fancy him to do it so. Riakphore isn't good.

Card is being televised in 10 mins. Think McCarthy is chief support so would imagine around 9-ish?
