Just a question too guys who have been watching boxing for longer than me. Have we ever had a better bunch of am's so competetive with each other? Also do you think any would be better off turning pro now? instead of waiting until 2012. Sutcliffe power is great jjj didnt know what hit him.
As I said earlier, that was the best year in a long time, and the amount of quality fighters who did not even make it to the finals was considerable also. It all looks well for the future.:yep
Con Sheehan - whatever about scoring irregularities - has some heart. I was ringside and i swear Reynolds looked fearsome. He looks like one mean-ass motherf*****
Personally I was very worried by the look of him. Under the normal run of circumstances I would say he looked terrible. Being that emaciated this far out from a fight would make me think he would have all sorts of problems as the fight approaches (hydration being the main one) and that his strength and stamina on the night would be a huge problem. However, I asked a couple of people attached to his camp what the story is and they said it's all fine. We all know Bernard was always a bit of a scrawny looking lad and never had much definition in the past. They reckon that Mike McGurn and the 2 sports scientist lads from UL who are doing his nutrition have this all worked out to perfection and that they are building him up oz by oz to be in 100% perfect shape for the night. I hope thats true because if it's not, (or if they get their calcuations wrong or if it doesn't work out the way they think), and he goes into the ring with Cordoba any way weight drained then he will be decimated. He looked happy and relaxed though. My worry is that its been pretty common knowledge that Bernard hasn't been making the weight as easily for a good while now. Another thing, he was talking about how Cordoba likes to do things at his own pace etc... and he's never in a hurry. I hope he doesn't get too complacent because I can guarantee you (after the Martinez fight) every opponent he faces will give some serious thought to jumping on him right from the off on account of him being such a slow starter.
And look at this year for retention of belts: Only John Joe Nevin, Kenny Egan and Con Sheehan managed it. Barnes too with a W/O. Sheehan was pushed all the way. Egan got a good test too. And dethroned champions include Ross Hickey, DO Joyce, JJ Joyce, Roy Sheahan. Then there are former champions not curently holding a belt who you would be proud to represent the country in action like Reynolds, Ahern. Throw in world youth medallists like Moylette, Kavanagh and Joyce and it's so strong - still, looking at that 04 poster, so many of them have gone on to be our biggest names on the pro scene. ****'s good!
Look at how well those who have turned have done Anyone have any idea who will we be talking about in 4 or 5 years from now ? Out of the current am's
William gonzalez and felix machado are dunne's sparring partner's. Gonzalez fought agbeko on the adameck-cunningham undercard for the ibf bantam title. Also duddy wide ud vanda, hopefully duddy won't pick up a cut tonite.
program starts here in Chicago at 7:30 pm so i presume the Duddy fight would start around 8 which would be 2am at home Duddy easy UD
Hopefully a smart boxing Duddy[if thats possible]boxes his way behind a jab to a conclusive victory.:bbb Who is staying up to watch Derrys favorite son.:hi:
definately gonna stay up 4 duddy. duddy/vanda will be the best fight of the night. Pavlik/Rubio and Cotto/Jennings will be quick executions.
