remember what happened when macklin headlined in the stadium i didnt head along that night i was expecting it to sell well i kind of regret not going after seeing the lousy turn out
Don't get me started on the football idiots. I'll watch premiership games, serie a games, spanish games or whatever on tv the odd time the same as anyone else so i'm not knocking that. But I can't stand people who talk about man utd and liverpool as we this and we that. the gas thing is that when it comes to world cup time they want england to get slaughtered and their mates stevie g and rio are the enemy. When I'm asked who I support and I tell people Bohs, I get some funny looks then the age old, 'yeah, but who do you support in england'. Get even funnier looks when I tell them I'm not ****ing english so why would I support and english team. the blow in Irish sports fan does my nut in. Back to boxing and Andy Murray. I really don't know how good he is. I've only seen him live a handful of times. To be honest I've never been that impressed. I've not been unimpressed by the lad either mind you. I think his standard of opposition has been really poor. He's only fought 2 lads with winning records. One of those was the Brazilian kid who he clattered in the bollocks. I was ringside for that one and I remember seeing it at the time and thinking I must have been hallucinating. I thought I had seen Murray clearly hit him way below the belt but when the referee counted the lad out I said it must have been my eyes playing tricks with me. Turns out the auld eyesight was alright! It's a bit of a shame because that could have been a very good test for him but we'll never know now. Anyway, take a look at the rest of his record. It's not impressive in any way at all. I do sort of wonder where the bit of buzz around Murray has come from? I mean good luck to the kid and all but he doesn't strike me as a lad thats going anywhere fast in a hurry. I would suggest EBU level is beyond him and that this EU title may be as far as he goes.
I did an interview with him a fornight ago that im playing on tonights show check it out in the morning if you get a chance!
Just got a phone call there it seems that the paddys day card in NYC has been cancelled i hope to god this lad is just winding me up.
Paddy I'm fairly new to this forum (good work all posters by the way), but what is your show? And you're hardly serious on Erin Go Brawl being cancelled? Those McLoughlins couldn't organise a blowjob in a brothel if that turns out to be true. And fair play to that earlier poster who highlighted the hypocracy of the Irish 'sports' fans. I had to tell the barman to turn on Rogie's fight the other night, if I hadn't, a packed pub - who would pay to watch Ricky ****ing Hatton - would have drank the night away and read about it in the papers afterwards. And still, despite the extraordinary spectacle unfolding in front of us, only about a quarter of people in sight of the TV turned around. I had to cheer on my own and felt like a bit of a wierdo for doing so. This is Co Wicklow for God's sake! Sports fans me arse
Welcome to the thread! besure to stick around all the boxing news on irish fighters seems to pop up here! if you go to the main page www.eastsideboxing.com there will be a link to the show there its called OnTheGrind. I usually come on the shows on a thursdays and interview irish boxers Ive got micky ward lined up for next week. Yeah I got a call from some one who was talking to wayne directly. none of the other fighters have heard the show is cancelled and i havent gotten a press release so its just a rumour at present. Ive been intouch with dean byrne since he came on the show and i know alot of his family have booked flights and hotels to new york. its would be a terrible shame if the card is called off after them paying for theyre tickets and hotels. especially in the current economi8c climate. I was nearly heading over for this show myself but i opted for the duddy fight instead In contracts to the whole rogan fight on in wicklow. I was in a pub/club in philly and they had friday night fights on on every wall in the place. boxing just doesnt get the exposure it deserves over here unfortunately. Hopefully it will change
I'll give it a listen, cheers I've heard of the show alright. I'm not optimistic on attitudes changing over here, though. The poster who said Egan and Dunne are the only known names was spot on. Still, you can always hope, eh? I do a bit of freelance and if interest grew, my bank balance would a bit too. By the way, which Irish newspapers/journalists do people on here rate as the best for boxing news, or even writing?
Irish news seems to be the best for boxing coverage at the moment! Podge down in cork tries his best with the echo. www.irish-boxing.com p4p number one for irish boxing news online cormac who posts on here has been doing a great job as has mark and podge theyre a real credit to irish boxing:good
I get all my news online! ive given up on printed press! i picked up a newspaper today and was surprised by the lack of news in there! Forgot to mention I gate crashed bert sugars birthday in new york
There isn't exactly a wealth of good boxing writers of here. Not ones that get published anyway. It all comes back to the fact that the public isn't interested about boxing and doesn't know anything about it. Two prime examples The Mirror and The Sun. The lads who cover the big fights are the main sports writers but know nothing about boxing at all. The end up writing total gash but no one knows any better when they read it the next day so nothing ever changes.I won't mention the two lads names because they are nice lads who I know personally and have decent knowledge of other sports. But what happens is this. It comes time to sort out that weeks markings (asign different people to cover different events). So these two lads who are the chief sports writers for their papers decide they fancy going to the fight for a jolly while at the same time topping up their bank balance. So they decide to assign themselves to the fight despite not having a clue about boxing. Instead of getting someone decent in they go themselves, sit in the bar until the main event starts then go out for that. It's just a very incestuous little circle as far as sports journalism in Ireland goes. They could easily get someone who actually knows what they are talking about to cover it and do a better quality job but they aren't interested in quality, they are interested in going on a jolly and topping up their bank account. They know they can get away with it too because the general public don't have a clue. I used to work as a freelance writer here but I found it so frustrating (in all sports) that I don't bother anymore really. It's too hard to break into the little inner circles, there are so many cliques and closed doors that it beggars belief. Talent or knowledge have nothing to do with it. It's all about who your da is, who your brother is or who is a friend of your family to open a door. I make a better living now than I did when I covered sport but I'd gladly go back to what I was doing if only it wasn't so ****ing insular and self serving. Anyway, as far as quality goes. You have Cormac doing a bang up job over there on his site and his Setanta blog etc.... George Kimball is always a quality read in The Times. Tom Myler is pretty good in the Indo. Thats the top three for me (in no particular order). I lost a lot of respect for Gerry Callan when Dunne was fighting in the Stadium after coming home. Callan came out from the bar after missing half the undercard (no crime there) but wrote about one of the fights he had missed and had a pop at the Irish fighter (forget who it was now) about his performance. Simliar thing happend again the next time Dunne fought. It's just not what a quality writer does. He may know his stuff but I can't really respect someone who does that.
another 5 star post bam bam I noticed this at the press confrence for cotto jennings they were basically letting the same three guys ask questions. (until me being the rude ******* that i am just crashed in) But i saw some guys there that were pretty much afraid/too polite to ask questions. and it was a shame that cottos advisor was so friendly with this three guys (who probably had pre rehearsed questions for him anyway) its not about what you know its about who you know. which is a terrible shame. but hey thats life.... but at the same time were lucky to have guys like Cormac Mark and Podge doing thier thing. they love the sport and it really shows through with everything they do.
Yep that sums it up Paddy. I was never afraid of asking questions at press conferences and stuff like that. But when you did you'd get the 'who the **** is this lad' glare from all the regular faces. It was always a case of 'he's not one of us who does he think he is', and they dislike you even more when you know more than they do because you actually have a good working knowledge of a given sport. It's a tough market for sure. That said I wouldn't put the poster above (ah,sure) from pursuing his passion. Stick at it and hone your skills. Write a blog or whatever to keep yourself sharp if you aren't picking up paid work. You'll need a break to make it into the paid ranks to the extent you can pay the bills doing the job. Just be aware that its a hard slog though.
