I dosent take a genius promoter to realise this is the sort of way to get crowds in the door. Also from being on holiday in new york about a year ago and chatting to irish people in bars id bet this is the sort of thing that irish fans would love to go to because once they realise your irish they just want to know whats going on back home.

Yeah that Irish Ropes crowd seem a bollocks. I had hopes that RTE or Setanta was going to pick up the promotion.:bart

    Lads,

Danny O'Connor has been added to the card in Boston that Spike O'Sullivan is on, according to Paschal Collins. They're trying to put Eddie Hyland on too, so a bit of good news at least. It will be on Go Fight Live on the night, available for us all (for a small fee, or course!). Spike has a new opponent - I'll let you know as soon as its confirmed.

On the Cubans - they'll be going again in Newcastle on April 18. As much as he'd like to promote every time in Cork or elsewhere in Ireland, he gets better support from the media and fans in Newcastle. He has stated definitively though, that they WILL be on Irish soil fighting again soon. When they are, lads, I implore youse all to go see Luis Garcia. He is a special, special talent.

A good feature coming up this weekend with Gary Hyde, Spike and hopefully Jamie Moore. They should have been done earlier this week, but I was up to my balls in credit unions melting down, politicians fighting, and all kinds of other nonsense I would rather not have to report on.

I think both Ardy and BamBam are correct - Belfast and the North always get behind their lads. The Irish News is fantastic for boxing. But it can be a whole different world down here. Men's hockey (you believe dat?) gets more coverage. Gerry Callan, the Mylers and Eamon Carr are four lads I can think of that are the saviours for boxing in the papers here. I shudder to think what would happen without.

And, I think you'll all agree, it's ironic - boxing has always brought out the best in sports writers - Michael Katz, George Kimball, Tom Hauser, etc. Boxing fan or not, these lads could bring a morgue to life for readers. Why can't sports editors see that anymore???

Yeah danny was telling last night he was moved to the card.

the webaddress is www.gofightlive.tv I would imagine they will charge 5 dollars or so atleast thats what they usually charge and they usually show the whole undercard aswell so it should be interesting

they were trying to negotiate for the irish ropes show...

Hopefully spike gets an opponent thats been a bit more active than the one they had lined up previously

Dunno why I've talking so long to reply but anyway, it was a good nights boxing in Newcastle and the 3 Cubans really stood out from the 3 local prospects. The difference in talent as you'd expect was night and day.

Alexei Acosta just keeps doing what is asked of him. He goes out there, gets to work and puts people away. Strangely he wasn't meant to be regarded as much of a puncher but he's landing so many clean, precise punches on guys(it was a great bodyshot that won this fight) that he's taking them out and doing it quick. His opposition has obviously been less tough than the other two due to his hand injury, but injury or no injury it is clearly time to step him up a little.

He's got a nice tight defence, and looks to land the left hook in typical Cuban fashion. Throws plenty of punches aswell and I just wish I'd get to see a bit more of him because he looks a good prospect.

Perez was disappointing for me. He was in against a spoiler in Page who was more concerned with frustraing Perez than winning and frustrate Perez he did as Mickey Joe seemed disinterested at times. In the 7th round Perez showed his quality as he pushed Page off whenever he clinched and backed the American up to the ropes regularly landing plenty of good shots. Had he fought the whole fight like that I'd of been extremely impressed but unfortunately that wasn't the case.

The only punch Page could really connect on Perez was the straight right, due to Perez leaving his hands quite low and the straight left being the easiest punch for Perez to land(hence he threw it the most and it was the most countered). Page even when he does actually fight is a counter puncher and I don't think that really suits Perez. Perez as a counter puncher himself would of been much more comfortable with an opponent who came at and allowed Mickey to use his speed and ability to pick them off.

Of course not every opponent is going to do that for you and hopefully this served as a good learning experience for Perez, he also got rounds in. I'd like to see someone like Tomasz Bonin in next, but I'll be hoping for a big improvement because I felt a little let down by What Mickey did compared to the promiss he has shown in the past.

Now.......Luis Garcia, the clear standout of the bunch and obviously a special special fighter. Garcia put on a clinic against a very tough, game opponent. Gbenga is a little crude but he's genuine Commonwealth title challenger level and Garcia toyed with him at times.
His footwork is something to behold and it allows him to be out of range whenever he needs to be and in range with his feet set whenever he needs to be. His combinations are fluid and powerful and he busted up Gbenga tremendously.
I suspect the Ghanian suffered a broken nose with the amount of blood coming from his nose. Some of it even got onto myself and Podge !

The only problem I can see with Garcia at the moment is overconfidence, he does showboat a little at times and will consistently leave his left hand very low. A better fighter might make him pay for that and it's one thing he'll need to get sorted as he moves up the levels.
I saw him in his first fight and I thought he looked a great prospect, but the rate of improvement has been imense and I feel Garcia is at European title challenger(or there abouts) already.
Another step up will be required for him next to prevent him going stale or becoming bored or complacent.

I'd like to see someone like Euegene Heagney next for Acosta, Heagney wouldn't be stopped that easily and with his large from would provide something different to challenge Alexei. It's a challenge I think he'd comfortably overcome but it would be a good one none the less.

Edit: btw that Brazilian Murray was fighting was hit a little below the belt but he would of been okay to continue if he wasn't starting to ship too many for his liking. Murray was getting to him and he quit. He's been stopped by average punchers since so he's shown he's not the most durable and for me he wanted a way out and found it.

Something doesnt seem right with the Irish Ropes show. How could last years card with James Moore headlining get the greenlight but not this one. I know it was a Monday night but you think if properly promoted then it could sell enough tickets. Its probably for the best since they didn't have opponents for half the fights. It would have been a card with huge mismatches and the house fighters would have one every fight.

A sorry state of affairs indeed.Something is seriously up at Irish ropes. Im from mayo myself and word in boxing circles around the county was that eddie was goin to pull the plug on the irish ropes venture now that his only real ticket-seller duddy has cut loose his ties with the company. Its a shame if it comes to this because it was excellent to see an irish boxing promotional company doing well state side, but looks like the brothers have shot themselves in the foot.

The fight being cancelled is terrible news for Lee. He really has to get fights under his belt. His first loss, a long lay off, a return fight, an even longer lay off, surgery and now a cancelled fight. Very bad 12 months for Andy.

yup hes gone off the radar a bit, steward was saying a while back that golden boy and top rank wanted to sign him up however steward has him on a fight to fight basis with whoever which has begun to undoubtedly hurt his career

he needs to get going properly with a series of good wins against non tomato cans to advance up the rankings for the big fights i think he can win
