Hey guys. Just checking in to see what's going on. I was invited by a member of the forums (thru my Facebook account) so I decided to read what was going on in Irish Boxing. Living in the States kinda secludes us from the great Irish fights - you guys agree?!? Anyway I wanted to clear something up. It's unfortunate that because I didn't make a statement after the weigh in fiasco for the Martinez fight, that people have come to their own conclusions. So I'm going to lay it down right here. ADRY - First off I'd like to say this to you. I am not a Prima Donna. I would also NEVER put my hands on anyone (this includes the absurd journalist you mentioned) except for the fact that he had first pushed my wife - off camera. No man should every put his hands on a woman no matter how old he is!! I was only defending my wife - not that she can't take care of herself!! Anyway, we all know that Martinez failed to make weight. He then refused to try to take off the excess weight. He arrived in Belfast 9 lb over the 124lb limit - 3 days before the fight. I've since been told by credible sources that he had "no intention of making weight" and that he was told not to worry about it because it would be "taken care of" for him. And yes, I weighed in light - 120lb. But if Martinez had weighed the contracted weight of 124lb the fight would have gone ahead as planned. In fact, we had already gone up 2lb to please him and he still couldn't / wouldn't make it. Originally the fight was made at 122lb for an International belt. But I wasn't worried about the difference between 120lb and 124lb. It was when he blatantly refused to take off the extra 1 and 3/4 lb that I got upset. Doesn't every fighter have to make weight? Why should one fighter have to work hard but not the other? The extra weight was almost like someone throwing a 2lb bag of sugar at me all night long. I would have taken it - haven't I taken shots from the best of them!! lol - but the BBBC wouldn't allow it. So the fact of the matter is, whether I was offered a "bribe" to take the fight or not, ultimately Martinez was given an hour to lose the extra weight and he refused. He sat down right after the weigh in and drank a bottle of water in full view of the boxing board. They in turn closed the scales an hour later and canceled the fight. Now he gets to fight on March 7 and I have to fight for damages that the BBBC say I'm due. That's my 2 cents. Thanks for reading!! Wayne
Thanks for clearing things up Wayne(some might be skeptical it's actually you but since you posted on boxing banter before I have no reason to doubt) I assume you are still planning on carrying on in your career , and if you are , are you close to getting any fights lined up ? I'm sure you have probably been discouraged from your last two lined up 'fights'(that didn't go ahead) in Ireland , do you still plan on fighting in Ireland again at some point ?
:rofl mccullough coming to get you.... mccullough coming to get you... your screwed now ardy.... you may hope wayne doesn't know your address:rofl :rofl :rofl :rofl :rofl :rofl :rofl
I post quite a lot online. Love staying in touch with my fans / friends. My wife got me addicted to the forums and sometimes I don't like what I read. So it's best to hear it from me. Ardy you're safe! Don't worry. Unless you push my wife, of course! lol I do still plan to fight because I'm "addicted" to boxing. Not for the money cause there's not even close to what I was being paid when I was a Champion. Maybe I like getting hit - you'd definitely think it when you watch some of my fights! lol Wayne
Good to see you on Wayne, do you still use you myspace account much? I used to keep in touch with your training on that. If you need to keep in touch with the fights on rte, they have a live webcast of all their boxing on rte.ie. I'm living in England so it's fantastic to watch all the boxing from back home. Are you going to be at the Calzaghe / Hopkins fight? I'm off the Vegas for it Cant' wait to savour the big fight atmosphere in Vegas! Adam
Hello Wayne, I don't know whether to be delighted or frightened that you actually noticed any thing I wrote:scaredas:. But it,s a forum, and arguements can become exaggerated, when trying to make a point.Basically there was a lot of bad press involving the weight-in fiasco, and unfortunately you left Belfast under a dark cloud. My derogatory comments about you were made more through frustration rather than malice. It was just a pity Belfast missed out on a great night of boxing, and I was venting as one does. Wayne, I have been following your career closely since your Albert Foundry days, I remember yourself, Eamonn Magee, Patsy McKenna[ my old buddy] and Harry Robinson travelling down to Dublin together in the one car, for the Irish senior championships[that's a long time ago now].I have seen you fight every time you come home, and I made the trip to Glasgow to watch you against Harrison.Scott looked two weight divisions bigger that night. I was in the middle of a lot of growling Jocks, and everytime I cheered for you they growled at me even louderatsch Another funny note you might appreciate about that night was, there were fans waving the the unionist Ulster flag sitting alongside fans waving the Irish tricolour, and both these sets of fans were there to support you. You and McGuigan only had that sort of appeal. Good luck if you consider to fight on, and don't be a stranger to this thread, if you have the time could you post some information about yourself on it.:hi:
Ardy I'm glad I got your attention! lol Anyway, no offence was taken. I've been criticized many many times throughout my career and I've always - and sometimes my wife - tried to defend myself. But there are many people who don't like to be corrected. Don't you think that I was upset I couldn't get to fight that night. I had fought long and hard to box again, let alone in Belfast and I wasn't going to let some fat out of shape opponent dictate to me. I felt I needed to stand up for every other fighter who has gone through the same thing. Unfortunately I'm the one not fighting anytime soon but Martinez is. That's what's wrong with this sport. The wrong people are punished. I'll be back, just be nicer about me next time!! lol Wayne
Yea Ardy............hahahaha. Its all good. You the man Ardy for setting up this thread. I remember when the Belfast Judge from New Zealand sang 'Danny Boy" after an Amateur fight I think. He then went to Japan with Wayne on a pro fight. Got a free trip to Belfast too for his troubles. I know this guy personally but can't remember his name. Wayne's ardent supporter in New Zealand. All the best to Wayne if he wants to keep going, lifes full of choices but sometimes we just keep on doing what we do because we're hooked in it!
I remember it to, it was the presentation ceremony at the Commonwealth games when Wayne won the flyweight gold.
Wayne, its good to have you posting on this thread. How is your career as a trainer going, who are you working with now?
The guy you're all talking about from New Zealand is Bob Gibson. A great guy and good friend of mine. I trained a few guys last year but got sickened by it when one of them paid me 3% instead of 10% after I'd worked with him for almost a year and then he got his butt beat when he stepped up to fight for the World Title. If he'd have taken my advice and done what we'd worked on in the gym, he would / could have won that night. Instead he let his emotions take over and then blamed me for it. I'll wait until my career is totally over before I decide to go into training full time. Until then if the right guy comes along, I'll happily help him out. In the meantime I'm working as a PR Associate with the UFC. I'm getting to travel with them. I love the sport and meeting the fans of another sport who know me through boxing is awesome! Wayne
