he has fought pretty poor opposition for the most part, i mean if you check out his record on boxrec his last five opponents have been inexperienced and with pretty poor records but he did ko somsak sithchatchawal before that. His win against cordoba i dont know much about but it was a split and he was the home fighter. I wouldnt put too much emphasis on the sidorenko loss it seems to me that he has gotten the benefit of an awful lot of close decisions in germany.
Thia fighters generally stay very active though and fight a lot of poor opposition, I wouldn't hold that against him. The fights with Cordoba and Sithchatchawal though prove he is a tough customer. Only seen the small youtube clips now myself though, hopen to get some of the fights at some stage.
Duddy vs. Lee Could Happen in November; Wilder Has Surgery on Injured Hand By Sean McDaniel: According to the latest boxing news, Irish middleweight contenders Andy Lee and John Duddy could be fighting on November 28th in Ireland. Promoter Brian Peters is trying to make it happen and will be looking to make it a 50-50 deal between the two middleweights. Lee, 25, is reportedly interested in making the fight, so its up to Duddy to see whether he might want to take on the bout. It would be a dangerous one for the 30-year-old Duddy, theres no question about that. Duddy was recently defeated by Billy Lyell in a 10-round split decision in April. Although the fight was ruled a split decision by the judges, it looked as if Duddy lost every round of the fight on my score cards. Duddy never seemed to get into the bout and was hit with big right hands in every round by Lyell. Despite the loss, Duddy is still ranked at number #9 in the World Boxing Organization. Lee defeated journeyman Anthony Shuler by an 8th round knockout last Friday night. The win was less impressive than it might have considering that Shuler has been knocked out early in his recent fights against Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., Andy Kolle and Michael Walker. Lee hasnt looked good since being stopped in the 7th round by Brian Vera in March 2008. Lee has won four fights since then but hes taken a lot of punishment in each of his fights, and especially had problems in his 10-round decision over Alexander Sipos in March this year. Lees competition seems to have been getting worse and worse in his past two fights, which perhaps may be a signal that Lees development as a middleweight isnt progressing forward like it should. A fight against Duddy would be the equivalent of two flawed diamonds going at each other. One would hope that the winner of the fight would learn something from the fight and come out improved, but thats unclear. Both Duddy and Lee appear to need a lot of work before theyre ready for top level opposition at this point.
I watched the Somsak and Cordoba fight on the weekend for an article I am doing. What you got? got the Sidorenko fight? Did you get this DVD offa the Champ Channel? Poonsawat is a talented wee ****er - he is like two different fighters in the Somsak and Cordoba fight.
Poonsawat is going to be a harder test than Cordoba. Look at the ko record he has he can bang a bit. Dunne in his last fight looked stronger but he cant afford to be taking too many shots from this guy. I would love Dunne just to box this fella and keep it on the outside and in the latter rounds if he can finish it off so be it. I wonder if the binman got time off work to come over and watch the champion again.:tong
dont worry about the binman...the clown and his side kick maloney can go and fu*k...dunne has an uphill struggle against the thai....but thats what make this so exciting...i have not been to dublin before to watch a fight so this is starting at the top
I thought RTE were making cutbacks which is the main reason for there being less boxing on tv now. It's a bit unfair to blame Peters, obviously RTE needs a big name like Dunne to headline shows otherwise they aint interested. McCloskey would be the only other boxer that Peters manages that they would consider headlining a show and since he's waiting on his Euro title shot that wasn't an option this summer. I reckon Peters gets too much stick on here, he has done a lot for Irish boxing but her can only do so much, he seems to be the man when he puts on a good show and then the sole cause for there being no boxing on when there's a lull in RTE boxing shows. As for Charity Lord of the Rings, we all know how fond RTE are of these reality shows so I'm not surprised they went for this.
I think one reason people are upset with Peters is his seeming agenda of trying to shut out all the other Irish promoters. He's got a monopoly on the National stadium, yet the last card he actually held there was July 2008. With Dunne's fight being in the O2, and McCloskey's(should it be on another card which is seeming very likely), most likely going to be in the North despite the extra tax you have to pay, it means the National stadium quite possibly won't be used at all by Peters in the rest of the year. Just because he can't get tv, doesn't mean he couldn't have some smaller shows on and the National stadium would be perfect for that. Guys like Andy Murray or Stephen Haughian would be perfect for it(granted they could do with a Dublin name on the card aswell to help shift the tickets) but Peters hasn't even thought of a small card or any since Dunne's win. The National Stadium would be ideal for other promoters(eg Paddy Hyland Snr), but they can't get an use of it because of Peters and Peters himself has seemingly no use for it. What's worse is Peters would of had an idea over the past year or so how much he'd need the stadium. Seeing as he's had no cards we'll give him the benefit of the doubt and say he expected to have 2 cards there this year. Now signing an exclusive contract for the stadium's use wouldn't seem to make much sense only for 2 cards, unless your intention for having it was to prevent other promoters from being able to promote. The fact it hasn't been used in over 13 months(for pro boxing) says it all. But to borrow a crap cliché, at the end of the day Peters is a business man. of course he wants a monopoly, however he should never have been given an exclusive deal and the fault really has to lie at the hands of the IABA. Won't stop many people having a sour taste in their mouts over Peters' actions though, especially when the only boxing he's given us in the last 5 months has come by way of a reality tv show.
I agree with most of what you say here. The thing is with Peters, he is a businessman first and foremost, so it's not in his interest to put on small non televised cards that probably wouldn't sell that well anyway and as a businessman it's not his problem to worry about other smaller promoters or where they are going to hold their events. It's a bit unfair but it's business. I think people expect too much from him, he can't be all things to all people. The way I see it he has taking huge risks to raise the profile of Irish boxing and although he may not be a "real" boxing man, whatever that is (maybe Adam or Liberities can fill me in on that one , he seems to have the boxers he manages/promotes best interests at heart and is doing a great job with Dunne, Murray and McCloskey careerwise. The people who criticize him for not putting on more small shows are probably the same people who wouldn't even attend these events cos they are saving their money for the big shows like Dunne and Rogan so it's a bit hypocritical.
If your looking at boxing as a business the smaller shows are never about making money they are an investment in your fighter and you will make the money back ten fold in the future when they do the big cards in the likes of the O2. :deal
I agree but at the moment there seems little point in Peters putting on small shows, look at the Hyland card a few weeks ago, the venue looked half empty even though it was a decent card. Peters was on the right track last year with Dunne, Lee and McCloskey all headlining shows, this was an example of him investing in his fighters, especially Mccloskey who was unknown to the public at the time. I'm sure he would be doing the same this year if he could, sure wasn't he trying to get Duddy V Lee for November? It's too easy to say that he only cares about the big names but isn't that what the fans are always complaining about, that there are no big fights?! The man can't win
