Boston is a really tribal city and Im not talking native american Indians. Most of the politicans, cops, firemen, and city workers are irish catholic. In Boston the FBI means full blooded Irish. If the city had Duddy or Lee their popularity would be through the roof.

Guys anyone looking at the olympic box offs in dublin this weekend. The one that sticks out is the middleweight rematch. The situation seems to be however wins tonights final between sutherland and o neill will go to the summer games. The other guys in the qualifying group are fairly poor.I really hope ONeill does it,he is a great boxer and a nice lad.The other Darren.... well im just suprised he can get a head gaurd to fit around his big head.

Yes Puca - Sutherland like Bernard Dunne enjoys the sound of his own mouth.

    Andy Lee
    James Moore
    Paul McCloskey
    Matt Macklin
    Martin Lindsay
    Henry Coyle
    Paul Hyland

I didn't mention Duddy, as he is already on the world stage, thus he has arrived, which means he is no longer a prospect, and the same can be applied to Bernard Dunne and Neil Sinclair. There isn,t the great strength in dept in Irish professional boxing as there would be in Britain, but things are improving all the time, as it,s all about funding and RTE and now Setanta [TV companies] are putting money into the sport.

It also helps that we have a world class promoter in Brian Peters, without him the resurgence in Irish boxing would not be happening.

There is nothing wrong in a bit of confidence. Sutherland has indicated that he is about to turn pro this year. I will make the bold prediction that he will be an "Irish Nigel Benn".I think the guy will be great for the sport here.:yep

I'm sorry but you really should slap yourself for that comment , I don't know how anyone that has seen Macklin's fight with Moore could say that there has ever(in the history of the sport) been a fighter with more will than him .
I've never seen a fighter want it so much and not get it , the 9th round where Macklin didn't really have the power to stand and still forced himself forward throwing punches would bring a tear to your eye .

I think he is slightly better than Duddy , although both are around the same level .

The best Irish prospects at the moment are Paul McCloskey and Martin Lindsay.........well Andy Lee obviously too but everyone is aware of him .

Darren Sutherland will be a great prospect when he turns pro too , I think he will reach European level at the very least and quite possibly more . He does rub people the wrong way though and gives off an awful air of arrogance , even though I don't think he's as bad as he seems . A bit like Alex Arthur that way .

The winner between O'Neil and Sutherland should make the Olympics but it's not a given . It'll be a close one but I think Sutherland will edge it again and I think he probably has the better chance to do something in Beijing........although I can't see either medaling .

Ardy - have we got some claim on Jamie Moore who beat Matthew Macklin - I was looking at the Irish boxing website last night - under champions it has Jamie Moore (not James Moore) at number 1 for Junior middleweight. Is there an Irish connection there - he's rated number 6 in the world.
By the way despite thinking Sutherland is bit fond of himself I would agree with you that he should be made for the pros and will add further to our existing pool of talent in the middleweight division.

Don't forget our resident poster Wayne McCullough - surely one of the gamest fighters ever.

Yeah, thats about the right list of "prospect" - I'd add Andrew Murray and Stephen Haughian to that list - its just a pity Alo Kelly had to retire with a detached retina because I thought he would have had a good career
