Macklin claims European crown
25 September 2009 - By Mark Doyle Matthew Macklin claimed the European middleweight title with a devastating first-round stoppage win over Amin Asikainen in Manchester on Friday night.
The 27-year-old Macklin, who also holds the British and Irish straps, floored his Finnish opponent with a perfectly-executed left hook just under two minutes into the opening stanza.
Asikainen, himself a former European champion with just two previous defeats on his record, stumbled back to the canvas as he tried to rise to his feet.
Referee Luigi Muratore could have easily stopped the fight there and then but he allowed Asikainen to continue. He was merely postponing the inevitable, though.
A punch drunk Asikainen did his utmost to tie Macklin up for the next 30 seconds in a desperate attempt to give himself time to clear his head.
However, Macklin eventually connected with a straight right hand and that sent Asikainen tumbling back into his corner and on to the deck.
Again he rose but this time Muratore decided he was in no fit state to continue, prompting wild celebrations in Macklin’s corner.
Just one fight after claiming the British title with a stunning third-round stoppage of Wayne Elcock, Macklin was now the European champion and undoubtedly within touching distance of his long-coveted world title shot.

 

I am surprised to hear that, I thought you would be at ringside for this. Hopefully we get moved to better seats, I bought the cheapest seats in the house

 

I thought it was a disgrace that Darren's family found out hours after their son was dead, I can totally understand their anger, why couldn't someone contact them asap, I hope Darren's family find peace, my heart went out to them last night.

I think Peters has badly overestimated Bernards popularity.

The last event was a sell-out but it was promoted as a bill featuring Katie Taylor, Ken Egan, Andy Lee and Dunne, all pretty much household names in Ireland. Outside of Dublin and the boxing hardcore as far as i can tell most casual sports/boxing fans don't really care too much for Dunne. He seems to rub them the wrong way. As sports fans they will tune in but i don't think they'd give too much of a **** if he was KO'd, infact i know some who'd have themselves a right old chuckle.

Maybe but even since the 21st March there are just thuosand and thousands of more people unemployed. Were even worse off now then back then. Could be a lot of reasons but hopefully with a lot of the 60 ticktets sold the atmosphere will be all good.
