Gasman and adam, Now that's what I'm talkin' about - we're firing out the ideas. However, and this is only my opinion, six months max I would think - TV needs impact and wouldn't hang around. Culminating in one super night. Even a week of TV in between the fight nights (of pre-recorded footage similar to 24/7) to drum up interest in the mainstream. The quarters over one night with a nice undercard of some of our bext youngsters, then semis two/three months later with same, and one glorious finish with the High King of Ireland crowned on the final night.
I could only see it happening if the small promoters got together to run it as peters doesnt seem willing to work with anyone else going so far as putting on bigger shows on the same night as the smaller guys to **** em up. i agree that the SS format would be better but i could see the TV stations going for a prizefighter idea more as there's less risk involved on their part.
It would actually be a great opportunity for smaller promoters to collaborate and a win-win deal could be thrashed out if there was the will there in the first place. 6 months - 12 months - the duration could be worked out. The contracts and financial model is the trickiest obstacle.....
If something like this actually took off, it could make some boxers household names, and would make a whole new generation of fans. The question is will TV3 look at boxing as a viable product. Last year they walked away after one show with Egan. What went wrong with that deal???:huh
Egan got no help financially whatsoever - TV3 even billed for microphones used to interview Jamie Moore in Manchester!!! They barely advertised on their ad slots during programming, and cheeky buggers wanted him to pay for everything. I thought it would be the other way around. Naive Podge. I believe he lost a lot of cash on that show, and understandably is reluctant to part with it again after a sour experience. For that reason, I think there's about as much chance of TV3 getting involved as me keying Mike Tyson's car and him thanking me for it. But you never know until you ask. If we all get our heads together and put together some good ideas, then it could be done. We have to pitch an unbeatable formula.
I have to say I'm glad we're back on topic with the boxing, I thought this thread had turned into the lounge last night. I love this Super 8 idea aswell, and I agree with those that this should be done over several shows and be a little more contender like than prizefighter like. In terms of bridging a gap in arena size between the too small National stadium and too large O2, what about the new convention centre at the Citywest Hotel ?, holding it there would solve many catering issues, internet access, accommodation for those traveling from far away etc. As for tv coverage if RTÉ or TV3 weren't interested then you could always look at TG4. They obviously have nowhere near the same viewer ratings or budget but they're more willing to showing Irish programs and promoting Irish sport than the other stations. Unfortunately having it on TG4 with less people watching it, the effect of promoting Irish boxing to the general public would be greatly diminished but it would still be far better than it not happening. If one of the big radio stations were brought in as a sponsor Today FM/Newstalk/even the **** that is Spin you could somewhat counteract the lower viewer figures of it being on a station like TV3 or TG4 over RTÉ just by the mass publicity you could give it. It's all pie in the sky at the moment but by talking about it and being realistic in what can and what can't be done, and finally coming up with a good proposal then who knows. While I think such a tournament would be very difficult to pull off it is by no means completely unfeasible. I mean if you look at the Super 6 itself people would of told you it's never going to happen. infact people did say that even after they announced it !, but now it's started and it looks like it's going to be a massive success. Who dares wins.
Breaking news: M'Baye withdraws due to an injury http://www.boxingnewsonline.net/BN08/detail.asp?id=1315 Paul Mc will still fight for the title
It all depends on the cost. The renting of a venue the cost of security for the night just that alone would cost a lot. I would love to see either happen the sad thing is you would be lucky to break even. Then the fighters purses on top of that aswell. Imagine "East Side Boxing Irish Section Promotions" brings you Paddyfighter. Live in the Citywest hotel. Live on the City Channel. 6 Paddy's only 1 Paddyfighter. I wonder if Buncey will be interested in fronting it.:yep
that would be a joke! although hes probably the only one mad enough to take the fight at such short notice
