    Press release just in:

Paul McCloskey’s European title dream is still alive and well despite Souleymane M’baye’s withdrawl from their scheduled European Light Welterweight title fight at the Meadowbank Sports Arena in Magherafelt next Friday night (November 6th).

McCloskey had been set to challenge the Frenchman for his European crown but a bicep injury has forced M’baye to withdraw from the bout and vacate the European title. However promoter Barry Hearn has moved quickly to secure a replacement in the shape of Spanish Champion, Daniel “Cobra” Rasilla who will now contest the vacant title with McCloskey in Magherafelt.

Hearn said, “M’baye’s withdrawl is unfortunate but ultimately Paul just wants to get his hands on the European title and he still has the opportunity to do just that in front of his own fans. Rasilla jumped at the chance when if was offered to him. He obviously sees this as a massive opportunity, he’s been in the gym training so making the weight will not be an issue for him and he’s promised that Irish eye’s won’t be smiling next Friday night.”

However McCloskey’s trainer John Breen says the late change in opponent won’t have any impact on his charge. “Paul’s very strong mentally so this won’t affect him. Remember he went in at a weeks notice himself to stop Colin Lynes to win the British title so this won’t bother him at all.

“Obviously it’s a no lose situation for Rasilla, he’s coming in to the fight the same way Paul did against Lynes so it’s a massive chance for him but Paul has trained long and hard for this and he’ll be ready for anything on the night. I’ve always believed that Paul’s a World class fighter and winning the European title will be just another step on the road to him proving that.”

McCloskey – Rasilla headlines an action packed night of championship boxing at the Meadowbank Sports Arena in Magerafelt. The undercard features a second title bout with Liverpool’s Steve Williams and Londoner Michael Grant contesting the English Light Welterweight title in a bout which will also double as an eliminator for the upcoming Light Welterweight Prizefighter event.

Belfast’ British Featherweight champion Martin Lindsay is also in action as he looks to stretch his perfect record to 15 straight wins. Fight fans will also get the opportunity to follow the progress of Barry McGuigan’s hot prospect, Carl Frampton. The 2009 Irish Senior Featherweight Champion turned pro in June and has already impressed in his two outings to date.

Liverpool’s “Dangerous” John Donnelly will also be in action as he builds towards a shot at the British bantamweight title while further local interest will come in the shape of Omagh’s popular light welterweight Damian Taggart. The card is rounded out by the professional debut of hard hitting Belfast heavyweight, David Hannah.

The event will be live on Sky Sports and tickets priced £30, £60 and £90 are available from Ticketmaster, all usual outlets and the boxers on the bill. Looking at Daniel Rasilla's record, Andy Murray beat him over 12 last year. Thought I knew the name. McCloskey should do the business.

I got word an hour ago about Rasilla. It should be an easy enough night for Paul.I was worried Olsugan[ the first choice replacement] might be too difficult a task for Paul.

Trainer Gerry Storey and manager Barry McGuigan are both expecting big things out of super-bantamweight prospect Carl Frampton. The amiable 22-year-old from North Belfast shook off a hand injury recently, to accommodate me at the Holy Family gym and take some time on the pads with his trainer (see photos below).

Carl discussed all matters boxing, including a slot on the upcoming Paul McCloskey show in Magherafelt, when the Dungiven headliner originally aimed to relieve Souleymane Mbaye of his European crown before the Frenchman pulled out and vacated due to injury.

“I can’t wait to get on to the McCloskey undercard and would love all my fights to be in Northern Ireland, but I know that’s not going to happen,” stated Frampton, whose first two pro bouts took place in English venues. “I’m looking forward to it and the more I appear over here [in Ireland], the better.”

A former star amateur and Irish international, Carl took just two rounds to dispose of Hungarian opponent Sandor Szinavel on his Liverpool debut in June. Yannis Lakrout managed to last the four rounds, three months later, yet Frampton still posted a shutout on the referee’s scorecard.

“He can punch short and long and has impressive power,” said Barry McGuigan in his newspaper column, shortly before Carl turned professional. “He has got everything; a great attacking fighter who I'm convinced will go all the way.”

Trainer Gerry Storey Snr agrees that Frampton’s power is a huge asset and explained the logistics to me, before taking Carl on the pads: “Carl has both the skills and the punching power and he’s not a wild puncher, he can throw short, compact shots which is a great asset; it’s terrific when you get somebody who can nail an opponent with a six or eight inch punch.

“We work with him on that and he does it very well – combining that with his fitness, I think we can produce a complete fighter.”

Debut foe Szinavel was no world beater but Frampton decked him three times before he was rescued. Local fans will be eager to see their hero involved on 6th November in Derry; but they may not get to view him for very long.

“I think the transition into the pro game has gone well,” Frampton mused. “I’ve had two fights now and in the first one I stopped the boy in the second round while the second one saw me win a unanimous decision. In that fight my opponent was just trying to survive, but on the whole things are going well and I’m looking forward to my next fight on 6th November.”

Great pics I would be lucky to do 1 of those chin ups. I hope Carl gets some air time on Sky would of loved to have got to this fight with McCloskey and a decent undercard as well it is a good card with good talented fighters on the bill as well compared to the Rogan fight on the same night that bill has a poor overall card to this one. All the best Carl next week.
