You are welcome Podge! In his pro debut, that tough Latvian (I think) was loading up and trying his best to land a big shot - but Paddy was just waving him on and seemed to thrive - not a bother. He didnt get a KO debut win like his brother (who was excellent) but he was in with a very tough guy and both wins were comparable in my book.
Podge, is there any chance of posting the results from Cork. Was there a sizable attendance? Is Collins looking to run more shows next year in Cork? Macklin: 'I can beat Pavlik' Submitted by Steve Wellings on 4 December, 2009 - 11:33 This content is protected Matthew Macklin puts his European middleweight title to one side on Saturday as he tackles Uruguays Rafael Sosa Pintos in a non-title showcase at The National Stadium, Dublin. The 27-year-old has been relishing a return to the venue ever since outpointing veteran Yory Boy Campas in March 2008. The stats of this ten-round contest point strongly to a routine, yet never easy, win for Macklin as he heads for sterner tests in 2010. 29-year-old Pintos is a sturdy campaigner with 38 professional outings to his name who, just five fights previous, extended world class Australian Anthony Mundine the distance in a similar non-title encounter. Matthew has insisted he is not looking past his man and with mandatory challenger Dmitriy Pirog waiting in the wings, he sees a career-defining year ahead: People have been saying that Dmitry Pirogs a dangerous fighter. Ive watched him and theres no doubt hes very good but I'm not a bit bothered about fighting him or anyone else, for that matter. Id take on any of the champions right now including Kelly Pavlik. I dont think there are too many big fights out there for Pavlik at the moment so if that fight came my way Id jump at it. I believe Ive the skills, the power and the chin to beat him. Promoter Ricky Hatton concurs. Matthew's performance against Asikainen proves that hes up there with the best in the world - he was superb and thoroughly professional, said The Hitman, who is still musing over his own ring career. Asikainen, remember, was rated as high as sixth in the world and this wasnt a lucky one-punch win. It was the result of years of hard work and dedication. When he came to join me as his promoter I promised that I would do all I could to get him to the top. I have sparred with him often enough to know that he has the ability to go all the way. Now I have to keep my word and I will. We need to work very carefully on Matthew's fights next year and a challenge against newly crowned IBF champion Sebastian Sylvester - over whom Asikainen holds a win - is one possibility, Ricky added. It is conceivable that if Macklin uncorks one of the potent left hooks that flattened Amin Asikainen in his European title winning effort, he may hurt or stop Pintos. The visitor was after all dropped heavily and halted in three rounds in a recent bout and has suffered a one-round defeat in his early days. But boxing away from home I expect the South American to be cagey, hard to hit and intent on surviving the distance at all costs. He wont offer a great deal offensively and Macklin himself admitted that Rafael possesses a tight guard, after watching his crack at Mundine. This is why I expect Matthew to rack up the points early before turning the screw late-on, much to the crowds enjoyment, before claiming a wide points victory or late stoppage. Brian Peters promotes this Sierra Fight Night while RTE2 televise live across Ireland from 9.30pm. Macklin has been discussing the fight on Hatton TV: On the undercard,Lee Murtagh withdrew from an Irish super-middleweight clash with Anthony Fitzgerald, so the latter will now face veteran campaigner Matt Scriven, as all other domestic options appear tied-up. EU lightweight king Andy Murray has recovered quickly from a broken collarbone and features against Alex Bone while Omaghs Damian Taggart meets journeyman Wladimir Borov. JJ McDonagh, who made a successful debut in Belfast recently, also appears alongside Michael Kelly and Gavin Prunty. After suffering a shoulder injury in sparring, flyweight Jamie Conlan has been forced off the bill.
'If I was a betting man .... I'd put the harmonica on Murray?' ffs Jimmy 58-56 Murray. I had it even. Guess its your average hometown decision. Anyway, all my fears about Murrays limitations were realised there
Bodypunches gave Macklin R3/4 and then dropped and put Pintos in trouble with great body shots in R6.
