Journeyman? I wouldn't call him a journeyman because 11 fights isn't much of a journey. We're not talking about a wisend old pro here. We're talking about a youngster with a shite record.

It wasn't as if Murray was fighting some Peter Bucley style lad with all the nouse and knowledge and years of experience. He was made look shite by a kid who has a terrible record.

Just watched Paulie Hyland's fight there and I must say for the first time in a long time I was impressed.

His performances recently have been both disappointing and frustrating but from the 2 rounds I saw of Saturday he looked not only classy in there but effective aswell and there was some substance behind the style. He was loading up on his shots aswell, which was nice to see as too often Paulie doesn't sit down on his punches.

Heagney seemed to be applying pressure less effectively than their last fight, but I think a large part of that may have been the fact he knew he had to change from what he did last time if he were to win. Surprisingly Paulie, who's the naturally smaller man aswell looked more comfortable at the weight, as Heagney looked a little fleshy.

Good victory anyway and hopefully they can manage to get the Italian over for the EU title fight. Another performance like that and they shouldn't be too worried even if he has to fight away. It'd be worth the risk imo to secure the belt if it needs to be done.

Yeah now is definitely the time to take the chance for him. **** it, if he can't get the Italian over here for the EU shot then he just has to go there and make it happen. Strike while the iron is hot and all that. There's no point in delaying. Its now or never!

were did you see hylands fight big ears ??

i was there on sat and i thought he looked very good even though i thought the stoppage was premature

paul hyland seems to be a bit of an enigma

he looks great at times eg- against callaghan and heagney twice , the first time against heagney the sky sports reporters were going mad for him

but at times he has looked shite when on setanta ireland and supposedly when he fought in barnsley he was lucky to get the desicion agaisnt a journeyman

    Injuries to delay Mack's progress

Matthew Macklin lands a left on Rafa Sosa Pintos on his way to victory at the National Stadium.

    By Thomas Myler

    Monday December 07 2009

BRUISED knuckles on both hands could keep Matthew 'Mack The Knife' Macklin out of the ring for several months.
A mandatory defence of his European middleweight title against the unbeaten Russian southpaw Dimitry Pirog, tentatively set for February at an unspecified location, is now almost certain to be delayed, probably until March.
Macklin, Birmingham-born of Tipperary and Roscommon parents and a former Tipperary underage hurler, picked up the bruises in his winning 10-rounder against the rugged Uruguayan champion Rafa Sosa Pintos at a packed National Stadium in Dublin on Saturday night.
Referee Emile Tiedt gave Macklin nine of the 10 rounds, leaving him the winner by 99-88 on the Brian Peters promotion. He now has a record of 26 victories against two losses, with Pintos on 34 wins and five defeats.
"I hurt my left hand in the second round and my right in the third," he said yesterday. "He was a rugged type of opponent whose intention was to stay in the fight until the finish, which he did. But he hadn't the power to trouble me and I'm happy with the win."
Pintos said he had no complaints with the decision and said he would be willing to come back next year "and perhaps box Andy Lee". Peters later intimated that such a fight was a possibility.
Macklin's promoter Ricky Hatton, the former world champion at two weights, said last night: "I was impressed. He'll get over the bruised hands, and he's still on track for a world title fight in 2010. He's knocking on doors now."
Macklin started off confidently, shaking the Uruguayan with strong left jabs and hooks, and following through with jolting right crosses and uppercuts to the head and body. A cracking left hook just before the end of the second round put Pintos on the boards but when he got up, the bell rang.
Pintos often got through with long rights to the head as the fight progressed, but Macklin was scoring with the more effective shots, notably on the inside, though the visitor was nothing if not resilient.
If Pintos' cornermen were telling him he was slipping behind on points in their estimation, he was determined to keep the pressure on Macklin in the hope that he might land the big one -- but that golden opportunity never came. As the rounds passed, it became apparent that he would be in the loser's corner at the last bell.
Macklin was always looking for the knockout, and in the fifth round he had Pintos down again, this time from a powerful right to the body. Pintos was also floored in the ninth with a whiplash right to the body. He complained that the blow was low but referee Tiedt waved the boxers on.
This was Macklin's fifth appearance in a Dublin ring since he turned pro in 2001. He looked very impressive and, once his bruised knuckles have healed, he should be ready to continue his campaign for that world title opportunity.
On the undercard, Irish superbantamweight champion Paul Hyland needed only three rounds to stop Eugene Heagney in an all-Dublin clash. He then called out former world and European champion Bernard Dunne for a showdown in 2010.
"I think I could beat Bernard and he won't have any problem finding me." he said. "He knows my number."
When Dunne, who was seen at ringside earlier, was contacted for a response, he said: "I didn't see the fight, but Paul Hyland isn't the only one who is calling me out. They're all doing it."
Dundalk lightweight Michael Kelly, a former world military amateur champion, was also a man in a hurry by knocking out Slovakia's Peter Feher with a rapid left hook inside two minutes.
    southpaw
Two other quick winners were Dublin welterweight Gavin Prunty, who knocked out Bulgarian Kaloyan Kyuchukov in 38 seconds, and Mullingar supermiddleweight John Joe McDonagh who stopped Berliner Mario Lupp with 12 seconds of the first round remaining of their all-southpaw bout.
Cavan lightweight Andy Murray, European Union lightweight champion and holder of both the Irish lightweight and lightwelterweight titles, took a few dangerous rights from Ecuador's Alex Bone but had enough in reserve to win 58-56.
Omagh lightweight Damian Taggart used his better boxing ability to outsmart Bulgaria's Wladimir Borov to win a 60-54 decision

    I watched it on RTÉ.ie http://www.rte.ie/sport/other/audiovideo_index.html

I think the Setanta Ireland fight would have been the one with Robert Nelson where I was very disappointed in him. He dropped Nelson with a left to the body in the first round and looked ready to finish him. Then he fought the rest of the bout southpaw and looked crap and was physically bullied at times by a man who's 2 weightclasses smaller.

The journeyman he struggled with Nikita Lukin did go on to beat the #1 ranked European Featherweight, Merdov not long after his bout with Paulie. I haven't seen that fight, but despite what Lukin's done since you would want to beat him if you're going somewhere.

Anyway lets not get bogged down in the negative, you're only as good as your last performance and Paulie's was a good one. So he should go straight for the Italian and the EU title next, whether it's in Italy or Ireland it'll make no difference if he either stops him or makes it very clear.

If pavlik has MSG booked for st patricks day surely he has his sights set on duddy as a voluntary defence?? nice money spinner for Bob arums top rank promotions with john able to sell out the garden by himself. well its not like johns going to be able to climb the rankings again without taking a lot of risks to make him self mandatory so heres me hoping.........
