The Macklin article on the main page has, typically, started a war of words regarding macklin's nationality. One girl by the name of sarah was the only person fighting the irish corner and held herself well. This particular comment just took the biscuit "To neil - Macklin was born in Birmingham to Irish parents, he grew up in an Irish community, played hurling and Gaelige football as a child, spent summers in Ireland, and even played hurling for Tipperary!! Here is a direct quote from Macklin, “Every summer holidays I’d go over to Ireland and down to Four Roads (Roscommon), and at Christmas too, so it felt very natural for me to be playing football or hurling as we were part of a very close-knit Irish community. “I suppose that would have been a bit unusual for a boy growing up in Birmingham, but I’ve always considered myself to be Irish." Don't get mad at me because most of your boxers are not truly British!! Just remember, a cat can have kittens in the oven but that doesn't make them biscuits!!" Legend.
Yep ive seen the comments but i wouldnt waste my time trying to claim macklin as our own with the british, they even see mccloskey as british.........
Im in the same boat wouldn't waste my time. Question, what national anthem does macklin have played when he fights in england ?
I wouldnt rule out a big fight in the O2 his popularity is only growing here and until such time as he can sell out a 10,000 venue of course he'll look to make money using his popularity with 'them' !!
If he wins a world title we might get a voluntary in O2 or if doesnt get his world title shot he might take a voluntary defence of his EBU against andy if he gets past pirog..... + i dont think andys ready for macklin as he has serious stamina problems and shouldnt be allowed any where near a 12 round fight......
I agree with you, andy's stamina is questionable but i also think his far superior skill set would be too much for macklin and it would be over early, Just my opinion. Andy needs to remove the digit and get crackin at decent fighters in 2010.
lads are you two for real ^ macklin considers himself irish , so what is the problem my da was born and raised in london but moved to dublin at 14 he has irish parents and he was always brought up to be irish nationallity is for a person to decide not posters on an internet forum
Chill, neither of us were giving out actually we were laughing at the childish debate going on in the comments of the macklin article.
ah its a joke, even when macklin is quoted as saying he considers himself Irish the brits disagree! Any time i see an article on this site about macklin or mccloskey i look at the comments knowing full well before i see them what they'll be about.
Lads, could it not be possible that Macklin considers himself both British and Irish. Hes British with Irish ancestry. You get it all the time over here in America. I know a bunch of Dominicans and Puerto Ricans who were born and raised in America but still consider themselves Dominican or Puerto Rican. It doesnt mean that they dont consider themselves American too. You can understand how the British would feel about this. Imagine in 20 years some lad with the name of Pudolski, who was born and reared in Limerick,to Polish parents, became a top class boxer came out and said he was Polish! How do you think Irish people would feel??
If he would consider himself Polish, then he is Polish. Its down to the individual what he is. Irish or British, Macklin is an exciting talent that I will continue to support.:hi:
