    Intermediate boxing round-up

    Saturday, 12 December 2009 13:51
24 new champions were crowned at the National Stadium in Dublin on Friday night following the conclusion of the 2009 National Intermediate Championships finals.

Ulster dominated the evening's deciders, winning the majority of belts on offer at IABA headquarters. Dockers flyweight Ciaran O'Neill claimed the first belt of the night after coming from 2-0 down in the first round to win the 51kg crown at the expense of fellow Belfast man Sean McComb

O'Neill laid the platform for this verdict with an all guns blazing second round and forced McComb into a standing count en route to commanding a four point advantage at the bell.
Meanwhile, Agatha Mudryk secured bantamweight honours with a 4-0 victory over Michelle Chambers.

The Holy Trinity club won their first title of the evening after Ruairi Dalton bagged the men's bantamweight belt with seven points to spare over Dublin's Anthony O'Brien.
Dalton boxed well within himself in this encounter and was full value for his win.

The women's featherweight clash between Amanda Loughran and Tara Keane went the way of the latter, while the Holy Trinity did the double over Immaculata in two all Belfast 57Kg and 60Kg deciders between Sean McComb and James Fryers and Mark O'Hara and Paul T Hyland.

McComb opened the scoring two minutes into the second round, but Fryers was back on level terms in the third only to lose the initiative courtesy of a short range right from the Holy Trinity man. A further right inside the final two minutes sealed the win.

O'Hara was 2-1 up at the end of the first in his final with Hyland and extended that advantage to 8-2 in the second, landing two solid rights near the bell. O'Hara then tagged on six points in the final frame to land his club's third title on the trot.

The win completed a unique hat -trick for the talented Belfast lightweight following his victories in the Irish U/18 and Irish U/21 Championships.

Meantime, in yet another all Ulster final, Patrick Gallagher, the current U/21 champion, added another major Irish title to his impressive CV with an 11-2 win over Jamie Kennedy of the Toome BC, while Limerick's Jessie Lyons stopped Amanda Coughlan in the third.

Dublin welterweight Danny Quinn, roared on by his fans, appeared to be on course for victory over Nial Murray after taking a 2-0 lead in the first. But the Gorey man went in at the bell 3-2 ahead. Quinn restored parity in the third but Murray tagged on another two points before adding another six in the third round of a thriller.

Meanwhile, Finn Valley ace Paul Dooley edged out JP Delaney and Conrad Cummings made it four in a row for the Holy Trinity following a see saw battle with Dublin's Bernard Roe.

Both boxers were level at 2-2 after the first and tied at 3-3 after the second before Cummings drove home a beautiful right hook mid way through the final round. A left, right combo inside the final 30 seconds sealed the win and another remarkable night for the Holy Trinity, who claimed three titles at the National U/21 Championships in October.

Light heavyweight Brian Fitzpatrick also took home a title, courtesy of a convincing 14-5 verdict over Michael Frayne and Cork's Patrick O'Shea lost out in his quest to bring a belt back to the Rebel County following his 10-0 defeat to Sean Allen of the Arklow BC.

Allen's more aggressive style saw him command a 4-0 advantage in the first and despite appearing to tire at the end of the round he still managed to dictate the pace of the bout in the second, adding another point to his lead in the process.

William McDonagh beat Robert Kraska in the heavyweight final. The Limerick man's more accurate punching in the face of his opponents aggression, forged this victory. McDonagh raced 4-0 in front in the first and was 9-0 ahead going into the third.

Drimnagh's Sean Turner, the current U/21 champion, added to his growing collection with 4-1 win over the hard punching Christopher Devanney in the super heavyweight final.

Am I right in saying Kevin Johnson sparred with Martin Rogan? And was on Paddy's show bragging about what a tough son of a gun he was?

That was the most disgraceful performance I can remember in a high profile fight. Arsehole should never get any kind of title fight ever again. He was beyond ****. Mike Perez would have done a much better job, and he's still a baby in the pro game. Kingpin my hole.

Podge, seeing the likes of Johnson get a shot at the world title really pisses me off, especially when I think of Rogie - who was so close and clearly is so better than that Johnson. In fact Vitali is poor - I would be confident Rogan would give him a good run for his money if he had a good camp.

Rogie would have made Vitali work at least and woken him up to realise he was in a fight, that's for sure.

I'm gonna give Vitali a pass on this one - Johnson was so negative from the first bell, that I think Vitali tuned out and enjoyed the boxing equivalent of a nice, long, relaxing porn wank knowing the missus wouldn't be home for a couple of hours. He's actually a heavyweight I rate very highly.

Jesus, I feel for Rogie now, knowing he would have given 100% in a fight with either brothers if he had kept winning. Set up for a long time financially, but would have earned every cent. Don't get me wrong, I think he would have been beaten soundly, but would have gone down gloriously. Unlike that piece of distended rectum tonight.

Lads I love big Rogie myself and yeah sure he would have given it a go but Klitschko would have got rid of him inside a few rounds. He'd have walked into a big shot in no time and got taken out.

Johnson was dreadful though. Whats worse was all the mouthing off and throwing shapes he was doing. What the **** was that about. He came to lose to the fight on points and he's giving it the large one? ****ing idiot. When he did try and come forward a little bit in the 12th he nearly got banjoed.

Anwyay, I had that recorded because I was out on the rip last night so I didn't see any of the other fights.

I see Vic splattered Rojas in 2. Delighted to see him back to top form.

Bradley with a wide UD of Peterson was a little bit surprising. I didn't think it would be that lopsided. Anyone watch it?

WTF is this about Malinaggi hurting Diaz :huh did he hit him with the corner stool WWF style or something? Very disappointed in Diaz losing to him. I thought he was better than that
