:hi: McCullough desperate for Dunne dust-up 15 December 2009 - By Cormac Campbell Irish ring legend Wayne McCulloughs New Years resolution is to secure a domestic clash with Bernard Dunne. However, the former WBC bantamweight champion has told irish-boxing.com that securing any meaningful contests never mind one with Dunne - is proving difficult. "My wife - who is also my manager - has contacted every promoter she can think of but I can't get anyone to help me get back into the ring," he said. "I am praying every day that I get a fight. Keep on keeping on! It would seem that no-one wants to fight me and the young guys don't want to take a chance against me. People have forgotten what I did for boxing and certain promoters have also forgotten what I did for them." McCullough, 39, has not fought since June 2008 when he was defeated by Juan Ruiz in the Cayman Islands, but despite such a lengthy layoff, the Pocket Rocket believes he is ready for a fight with former World and European super-bantamweight champion Dunne. "A fight between me and Bernard would be a great one for the whole country," he said. "The fans that have contacted me are really hoping it will happen. They know that Bernard needs me more than I need him because he's been knocked out in a couple of his fights whereas I've fought the best in the world win or lose. But Brian Peters is coming up with all sorts of ridiculous excuses about why the fight isn't going to happen. I honestly believe that Bernard is scared!" In the past, Dunnes promoter Brian Peters has said that McCullough needs to get active, get winning and get ranked before he would consider making such a contest. "He hasnt won a fight since 2004 so he really would need to put together a few good wins including a win over a ranked contender before it could be considered a viable fight," Peters said earlier this year. For his part McCullough, who works for the UFC as a PR Associate, is looking forward to the festive season fight or no fight. "We have a traditional family gathering and keep Christ in Christmas," he said about his plans. "Last year we got snow which was unusual but nice to see in the desert! At New Years we watch the fireworks that are set off from the hotels on The Strip. It's a pretty cool thing to see."
Is Fury avoiding McDermott:think McDermott To Face Chisora for Tyson Fury's Vacated English Heavyweight Title; Fury To Fight The Winner by James Slater - There has been an interesting development on the British heavyweight This content is protected scene. Unbeaten and heavily publicised 21-year-old Tyson Fury, who controversially won the English title with a points win over John McDermott back in September, has been forced to vacate the title because of the hand injury he suffered in his win over Tomas Mrazek. Fury's hand is still not 100-percent, and he has been unable to go ahead with the British Boxing Board of Control-ordered return fight with the man many felt he lost to in McDermott.. This has been reported by The Manchester Evening News, and Fury, who is highly upset at having to give up his first pro title, will now watch old foe McDermott fight another unbeaten hope in London's Derek "Del Boy" Chisora. It has been reported that Fury will fight the winner, in a bout that will be a final eliminator for the British heavyweight championship (currently held by Danny Williams, Danny set to meet Commonwealth champ Sam Sexton early next year). So, we could be seeing some interesting all-British heavyweight rumbles in 2010. McDermott-Chisora is a good match-up, and one that will provide the fast-talking Chisora with his first real test. And the eventual winner versus Fury will be an intriguing fight either way - a return with McDermott would give both men a chance to set the record straight, while a Fury-Chisora clash has bad blood written all over it. And then, the winner of that fight would face whoever the British champion is after Williams and Sexton have met. Sounds good to me. Fury, however, is annoyed at having to vacate his English title. "I'm sick about it, but The BBB of C wouldn't give me any more time," Fury told The Manchester Evening News. "My hand is still only about 80-percent. Two specialists have recommended I have an operation and it looks like I'll have to [have one]. The Board said they will match McDermott and Chisora for the vacant title and I'll get the winner in a final eliminator for the British. I won't lose my position and it gives me hand more time." So, if Chisora is as good as he seems to think he is, and he manages to defeat "Big Bad John," we may never see a Fury-McDermott II - even though their first meeting sparked off one of the biggest controversies in recent British boxing This content is protected history. For what it's worth, I think the underrated McDermott will be able to defeat Chisora, most likely on points; and we will then get to see the demanded return with the 6'7" big name. Fury, by the way, is now being trainer by knowledgeable veteran Brian Hughes; the man who took Robin Reid to a world super-middleweight title. Hughes, who has The Moston and Collyhurst Lads Club gym on the outskirts of Manchester, is the third trainer to have worked with Fury.
I just hope the Pocket Rocket retires I am tired of seeing fighters come back just for the sake of it. He has made more than enough money from boxing and now working with UFC must be paying his bills. If he still loves the game so much get back into training side of things and past his experiences on to the younger fighters. I honestly think he can be a great trainer in the years to come if he wants to but to fight again maybe a step to far will go down as 1 of the greats of Irish boxing so just leave alone now.
Oh Wayne, oh Wayne, oh Wayne. Give it up. Up and comers and younger fighters don't want to fight you because you are now a parody of yourself. Haven't won a meaningful fight in 7 years. Haven't won a fight of any kind in 5 years. Lost 4 of the last 5. Its sad to see a lad like Wayne delude himself at this stage. It really is a shame
i think mccullough - paulie hyland would be a better fight for the irish title and a good stepping stone for paulie hyland
Thats a fight that would make more sense and could give Paul or Pajo the profile they need to take them to the next level:thumbsup
True enough but as much as McCullough wants Dunne for a big payday and a big Irish event is McCullough v Patrick or Paul Hyland going to be a big seller? I doub't they could have it at a bigger venue than the Stadium and I don't think thats what Wayne is looking for. Because he was a value for money fighter he was handed title shots when he was past operating at that leve. I think he's looking for another free pass back to the big time. The big time in this case being a sold out Point with 9,000 people and a live tv audience
I think it will be too hard for Wayne to make Super-Bantam or Feather Weight, The guy is nearly 40..... But like Nutter and Moorser said, Wayne Fighting Pajo or Paulie Hyland makes alot more sense than Wayne fighting Bernard Dunne.... If (a big IF) Bernard Dunne lost, He would have to hang up the gloves then and there.....
