I wasn't referring to those who've emigrated. I was referring to those citizens who've lived and perished in that period, who don't figure in Irelands current population of 6 or so million.
That why this 'per capita' claim is nonsense - you can't just claim that you've produced 17 champs from a population of 6 million or so citizens. That is an absurd, factually incorrect claim.

So? What's the relevance? Give it a couple of decades and I fully expect to see many Irishmen of various ethnicites in all major sports.

Cordoba was indisputably better than M'baye or Arthur; but that doesn't hide the fact that Dunne was one of three world titlists at the same weight.

It's bad enough when there were four recognised titles per weight divison; if you now recognise Dunne's belt on the merit of his opponent where do you stop? Do you also recognise Firat Arslan, Dimitri Sartison, Anthony Mundine, Yuriy Nuzhnenko etc etc

 

You are really clutching at straws now. That is how per capita statistics work, I didn't invent the concept. Are you saying that you want me to count every person who has ever lived in Ireland since boxing records began? If that's the case I would also have to count everyone who has ever lived in Britain for the same period. I didn't come up with these stats, they came from a list comparing all countries champions per population. It seems perfectly reasonable to me as I'm assuming it would to you if it showed Britain in a more favourable light. Puerto Rico is always noted for being a very sucessful boxing nation as so many champions are produced from such a small population, would you call this "absurd and factually incorrect" also?


You are assuming that people of various ethnicities would want to be refered to as Irishmen simply because of their place of birth. Just like all the many Irish men and women who emigrated over the years I would assume the people you refer to would want to hold onto their roots and think of themselves as Polish, Nigerian or whatever.



I recognise Dunne's belt for the reasons I stated but if you don't you can disregard it, that doesn't change much though, even with 16 champions who meet with your approval we are still a more more successful nation. I don't get why it's so hard for you to accept.
