Irish weight by weight rankings

The only thing i've learned from this thread is the population of Ireland....when you factor in how many people in Britain qualify to fight for Ireland/Irish titles based on parentage/grand parentage then I suggest that the numbers will be significantly closer.

On topic, I don't actually give a flying **** one way or the other..if a bloke wants to fight for the Irish title then good luck, its up to him. Even our very own Dutchman, Jeff Thomas boxed for an Irish title.

 

The list of 17 Irish World Champions was done on the Irish thread on this forum(shortly after Dunne won his title I think) and also Boards.ie. Good luck trying to crawl through all those posts finding it though, you'd be better off trying to list them yourself or asking for help on the Irish forum.

Also I head off to California for a few weeks and 1.5 million people have come into the country while I was away, mad stuff.

6 Counties- 1,775,000
=6,235,000 total

Now those are just the totals taken off wikipedia(although the sources for those figures seem fine) for 2009. Now no idea what effect the last year will have had, or whether things have changed significantly in the 3 1/2 weeks I've spent away from home but I think it's safe to assume that's roughly the population of the island.

Jon O'Brien, Declin Timlin, James Gorman(who should be down at Light-Welterweight), Martin Sweeney, Gary Hamilton and Mark Clancy haven't fought in 2 years is there much point ranking them ? Josh Rutgers hasn't fought in a long time either.

I agree with you on the Byrne-Gavin ranking, Gavin's win over McDonagh just gives him the edge. I'd have Coveney over Marc Callaghan, Callaghan imo is a shadow of his former self, while Coveney despite his losing streak still presents a good challenge.

Like someone else argued elsewhere(fairly sure it was Adam Burke) I'd have Eddie Hyland over Logan McGuinness. I say Eddie when he fought ***an(and I've also watched the fight on video) and I watched his fight on Sky against Mullin all those years ago. He's a greatly different fighter and I think he's done enough to just edge McGuinness.

 

a) i have travelled to over 40 countries. explain to me what is bigoted about my comment. not wanting someone that isnt from the UK boxing for the UK's title, theres nothing bigoted about that.

b) you still have to have a BBBofC license. Some of the fighters on your list do not have the irish equivilent

c) don't have a problem with it happening in a fight outside of the UK, as long as its UK fighters that have boxed in the UK before.

d) yes they are. Bami and Takaloo have lived in the UK since they were kids. Bami boxed for England as an amateur. Shinny Bayaar only became eligable for the British title after he gained citizenship. stop acting like your in the know about things when your clearly not, its not difficult to research

e) Fair enough thats those rules but if I was Irish i would be pissed of if fighters came over for one fight and got an Irish title fight straight away. I would want them to at least have a fight in Ireland . theres no way the BBBofC would let a guy thats been fighting in Austria for 6 years fight for a British title jsut because his parents are from england, no matter what his record he would have to prove himself in the UK.

f) theres no way that right. no chance he would be able to boxing in Britain without a license.


So let me get this straight. Has Frankie Gavin activley approached the Irish board about a possible Irish title fight??

the most important thing is where you personally feel you live blood has nothing to do with it. I have no english blood but I am english I was born here and lived here most of my life. Macklin can say he is Irish but he fights for the British title and has a brummy accent.

my father is born and raised in peckham london

moved over here when he was 14 he had irish parents and got plenty of stick over his accent but he always recognised himself as irish and was brought up in an irish household , he carries an irish passport and there is not one thing that is english about him as he was rasied with his irish culture and played galiec games etc and was always told he was irish by his parents yet by your logic he is english because he had an english accent at one stage .


and i guarantee ireland will have more world champions in the next 10 years then they have in the last 10 years , look at the amateurs coming through

on top of the great senior amateur team we have at the moment who finished ahead of great britain at the last european championships

In the last couple of world youth tournaments how many medals have Britain won ?? absouloutley none !!

 

That is your opinion which you're entitled to, you are saying you feel that where you live dictates what nationality you feel you are and that is totally acceptable, if you do not want to acknowledge your bloodline that's your perogative but other people do not feel the same way. For instance, I have a lot of Polish friends who moved over to Ireland about 8 years ago, some of them have since had children while living in Ireland, the children go to Irish schools, speak English (in an Irish accent), but their parents are adament that they are Polish not Irish and no one that I've ever come across has a problem with that viewpoint. I really can't see why you would have a problem with the same scenario regarding Macklin. It's not up to you to decide where anyone else's loyalty lies.

also mentioning accent was jsut a small comment and your run with it. I am saying your from where you choose to say your from. Macklin is Irish and English. you can say your 1 nationality or 10. But in terms of boxing, and rankings, if Frankie Gavin see themselves as irish, they should at least have a fight in ireland. then i will see him as Irish and British, same as Macklin.

amateur success doesnt equate to pro's. theres no guarentees on what will happen in the future.

 

Personally, as someone who could claim duel nationallitys, I see it as sad that those kids would not see themselves as Irish. We could go on about it all day but in my opinion that is a major problem in society.

I wouldn't want a fighter being able to fight for the British title without having previously had a fight in the UK. I just don't get why you Irish lads don't feel the same.

 

alright fair enough macklin is both but what im trying to say is your nationality is for your choice to make not some fool on a boxing forum who decides if your irish or english or both because you fought for a certain title or talk with a certain accent , its up to the person and not one of us has a say no matter if he fought for irish / british / japanese title it dos not matter , it is the individuals choice

you must admit if these guys did see themselves as irish, and want to fight for the irish title, they should at least have a fight in the country before getting a title shot?

 

that wouldnt bother me too much as there is not a great pro scene over here , its getting better with more and more shows every year but irish title fights can happen anywere in the world , steve collins won his irish middleweight title in Boston U.S.A even though he hadnt fought in Ireland as a pro , a lot of irish fighters have to go abroad to fight in either U.S.A or Britian so it wouldnt really bother me too much if they hadnt fought in ireland before thewy fought for an Irish title

fair enough. if i was irish i would want them to rename the title as its not the best fighters in ireland fighting for it, its the best fighters with irish heretgie.
