not anymore , the last while the title fights have been getting better with purley just irish born and bred fighters fighting for it

there is some tastey match ups for the future regards irish title fights in the pipeline and none involve english born fighters

the title is getting better recognition in recent years and it is going from strenght to strenght without fighters of irish heritage fighting for it so its not a joke title anymore and its becoming more prestigous all the time and it wouldnt bother me in the slightest to see someone like fury or frankie gavin fighting for it it just makes the value of the belt even better and could create some good match ups like fury - rogan or frankie gavin - dean byrne

it be good to see the Irish champions fighting the British or Commonwealth champions.

 

Is it possible for a fighter to hold an Irish and British title at the same time or would they have to give up one to fight for the other?

 

as long as there able to forfil mandatory commitments I cannot imagine it would be a problem. same as holding the British and European/Commonwealth at the same time.

I'm no maths whizz but that pretty much proves what I stated about Ireland being more successful on a per capita basis.

Please don't take this a sign I want to get into the "plastic paddy" ruck but Peter Maher is pushing it a bit.

 

Look, the stats you have posted are very impressive and all, but you can't state that you've produced 17 world champs out of a population of 6.1 million people. That's not how the concept 'per capita' works. Ireland has had more than 6.1 million citizens in the past 150 years.

And to be honest I can't say that I acknowledge Dunne's 'regular' belt. Caballero was the champ. Dunne beat a guy with a good ranking (who had admittedly defeated Cab). And who the **** are these 68 champs that Britain is supposed to have produced? These numbers seem a little suspect.

 

Maher was a paper champion in the time when there was one champion, that's at least as good as being a paper champion in modern times in the days of multiple champions. You know Gavin Rees etc, but just like Rees, Maher was technically a World champion.

 

Yep, I know who he is but his claim to the world title isn't generally recognized. If you are relaxing the criteria to include Maher then I'm sure there are few more Brit fighters who could also be counted.

 

Agreed, but there a quite a few Brit fighters over the years that were recognized over here/ in Europe as being world champions but not in the USA. Do they count?

Like I say though, I was just pointing out that Maher may have been a bit of a "cheeky" pick. I've no desire whatsoever to get too involved in this thread.
