The cliche in boxing is that big punchers often have brittle chins and that "pure", skilled boxer types have little power. Example of the big punch, brittle chin cliche would be Herbie Hide, Tommy Morrison, Eugene Hart, Tiger Flowers. Skilled boxers whom didn't carry a punch but relied on skills would apply to the likes of Paulie Malignaggi, Miguel Canto, Chris Byrd, Nicolino Locche, Tommy Loughran. Try to not give overwhelmingly generic answers. Yes, we know Tommy Hearns could punch. Yes, we know he was chinny. Discussions elaborating on your pics or debating others are welcome. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- What rare fighters were anomalies that defied these cliches? Iron Chinned Bangers - David Tua Gerald McClellan Bennie Briscoe Jose Luis Lopez George Foreman Jeff Lampkin Skilled Boxers W/ Big Power Freddie Steele Michael Spinks Ricardo Lopez Have at it.
Hagler could hit hard but chose accuracy. Andrade librado JCC Pacs chin seems decent nowadays McCall may not be considered a banger
I think Max Baer qualifies in the Iron Chin/Power Punching category. It seemed like he went down by choice against Louis each time he fell. But Galento couldn't make an impression on him. When Lou Nova came off the deck to drop and stop a Larruper determined to extend his career, it seemed the only time Maxie was genuinely forced into distressed submission.
Hearns, stylistically, was as pretty a ranged boxer as it gets. His style isn't that of a puncher. Brilliant jab, impressive movement, activity-All that ability is part of the reason he was devastating. He could set up his big right, which is why it landed enough to make a legend. Hearns is not a puncher in style, just in results and reality.
Don't know if I'd consider Sosa iron chinned... Unbelievably tough and scrappy though. Same vein as Iran Barkley in my opinion.
Why would bangers have weak chins ? I'm not familiar with that cliche at all. I understand that guys with little power often feel it necessarily to master a 'pure boxing' style, because they are going to have to win the rounds and the decisions so often. But I can't see a corelation between weak chin and hard punch. I don't see that trend at all. So I wouldn't consider iron-chinned punchers as "anomalies". There are loads of them.
